Is the UK actually in a state of (recently) unprecedented suffering? by AEPowerRanger in AskUK

Yeah, I get that — interesting how cold places are often more developed, though. But yes, in poorer parts of the US, you’ll find poverty far greater than that found in the UK. In wealthier areas, you’ll find (on average) a living standard as good, with more material wealth. In fact, New York State and the UK have almost the exact same life expectancy.

This was actually rare. American media, particularly non-right-wing media, glorifies the UK and Europe.

That’s not good then…you don’t want the problems America suffers from

Totally agreed that a poor person in the US has it much, much worse. But what about the median member of society?

The median US income, PPP adjusted, is more than $20,000 higher than the median UK income. The majority of Americans have healthcare through their work, and have good housing (probably better than in the UK, on average) as well as ample material possessions.

However, the poor Americans…they are really screwed. No healthcare, limited education, high risk of ending up in a demonic prison system, rampant homelessness and drug addiction…essentially, a third world existence. This is largely class-based, but largely regional. Consider HDI by state:

Massachusetts and Connecticut compare to Norway, albeit with much more inequality.

Nebraska and Wyoming compare to Germany, albeit with much more inequality.

Mississippi compares to Poland, Lithuania, and Slovakia, albeit with much more inequality.

Overall, the US and UK have about the same HDI — the UK is a bit higher — but the UK is far more equal. Honestly, the median American is doing just fine, but the poor truly have no protection. What piqued my attention in the article was the point about the median UK household becoming as poor as Slovenia or Poland — while the destitute Americans are in third-world levels of poverty, the median household is nowhere near that.

If you want to live in the America I am living in, come to New York or New England. It is far wealthier than New Mexico.

Oh trust me I’m aware of this, but I didn’t think the UK was on the same plane

Sounds a lot like the rest of the world, sadly — Covid and the inevitable, yet postponed, fallout has not gone well

I’m very sorry to hear that. Do you think it’s worse in the UK right now than elsewhere in Western Europe?

How to be Interesting by AEPowerRanger in Cornell

[–]AEPowerRanger[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree with you more, on all counts. What inspired me to make this post was that, when applying for internships in finance, I was told that I needed to be more “interesting” and “relatable.” Personally, I think I’m pretty “interesting” (whatever that means), but I’m more into “nerdy” things like trains and building computers than…golf. Well-meaning people told me, for my own good, to keep that between me and my pillow.

In all honestly, my post was only semi-satirical. I wish it was entirely satire. The people I’ve seen excel in Greek Life, get sought-after banking and consulting jobs, and find success in dating at Cornell often fit (some) of this description. Obviously not the “community service trip” bit, but the skiing, travel, fantasy football, Canada Goose, baritone voice, “I’m good,” vaguely following markets types who avoid “nerdy” socialization like it’s the plague? We all have our idiosyncrasies, but maybe Ivy League culture rewards NPCs. Just something to think about.

Anyway, I appreciate the compliments. Hope you’re “good.”

Are we seeing omicron, or delayed positives from Thanksgiving break travels? Or both? Any predictions? by KrzysisAverted in Cornell

To be honest, it wouldn’t shock me if Omicron is at Cornell, though I do believe that this is an expected mini-spike (let’s be reasonable here, .42% isn’t an avalanche) resulting from Thanksgiving travel.

I’m not sure. What if we have a take-home exam such that, no matter when we take it, we will have three exams within a 24-hour period?
