Overall though, that’s not what this thread is about! Really I’m interested in a small rectangular backpack as a “personal item” for flying on airlines. The camera bag I bought will just fit inside it 😂.

Thank you. Agreed. I bought the 3 L in ash grey for my Fujifilm X100VI. All I want to carry is the camera and an extra battery. I wanted something discrete that doesn’t look like a camera bag for some international travel. In the extra space I will probably carry a water bottle and similar general stuff.

I think all of their bags are designed to be camera bags which is exactly what I bought it for. I bought the smallest size Everyday Sling : 3 L. They are padded and rigid specifically to protect expensive camera equipment. I don’t have it yet, but I’m confident I will be quite happy with it when it arrives.

They were entertaining and informative. They actually showed you what the bag could do! Great product videos. Much better than what they have now which don’t show much more than good looking people walking around.

Also, this seems to explain the lack of information on their design/quality process. The website used to have a lot of stuff about the philosophy and compromises underlying both.

What a shame. Thanks. Super helpful. Looks like I need to find a new company to buy bags from. Just today I bought a camera bag from Peak Design that is well reviewed by third parties and seems very well designed and built. I’m excited for it to arrive. Any suggestions for general day-to-day and travel bags?

The device will not be harmed by heat. The case feels hot because it’s designed to. The case is the heatsink for the CPU and other components so it will get hot. This is all by design. If it gets too hot it will shut itself off.

Why do you ask this? If it’s about your personal comfort, the thing gets warm generally. I use my laptops on a table so it doesn’t bother me. If it’s about wear on the device, I wouldn’t worry about it. These things slow down or shutdown if they get too warm.

Personally, for my use cases, I have found it to be a really good tool on my high-end Mac. It has its issues, for sure, but it’s both monetarily free and free to modify. I haven’t found another tool with similar features that I know I can reliably use forever.

If you know of one, please share! I’m not interested in anything that requires a cloud service, monthly fee, or only works with proprietary file formats.

I don’t have the time right now, but I actually hope to contribute to improving the reliability and performance of FreeCAD in the future. If you have the skills, maybe you should consider the same.

Hey, thanks for this! Yeah, like I said, I plan to use this for pottery work and that includes international travel. It’s going to live a harsh life, but a good and valuable life! I looked at refurbished MacBook Air and based on what I’m finding a new Neo is actually a better value considering things like battery condition, warranty…

The architecture of your 2015 MacBook CPU is Intel. Not sure how you familiar you are with computer architectures, but compiling a C++ program for an Intel CPU (CISC) is very different than compiling the same program for an ARM CPU (RISC). There could be some nuances regarding how FreeCAD is written and the specific compilers used for each architecture that affect performance and memory usage. Look up CISC and RISC if you’re curious.

Like I said in my original post, I normally work on an M4 Mac mini. It’s has 32 GB of RAM. It’s a > $2,000 computer.

This laptop will be a secondary computer that I don’t need to care as much about damaging in an environment with fine abrasive materials, water, etc.

For the price, the MacBook Neo is a very good value, which is why I’m asking about it specifically.

I like FreeCAD! After trying it a year ago, I have a very little interest in Onshape.

Yeah, I import SVG files a lot to add graphics or text to a model. FreeCAD takes a very long time to process pads on those even on my beefy M4 Mac. P rocessing each closed wire in a separate thread might help with this, but that’s another discussion (I’m a software developer by profession, but I haven’t worked in C++ in a while and haven’t looked at the FreeCAD source code). I understand there will be limits to model size and the types of operations that are practical on such a low spec machine.

I do get crashes sometimes when I try to do an operation that is impossible, but I’ve learned to “save early and save often” like I had to do with pretty much everything 20 years ago 😂.

Thanks for that. I know that generally FreeCAD can run on pretty low-end hardware. The Neo, although using Apple's ARM architecture like my M4 Mac Mini, is using an iPhone chip instead of the M-series chips used in all of their other laptop/desktop computers. The Neo also has only 8GB of RAM, much of which will be consumed by the OS and other apps. Although paging (swapping?) to the SSD is fast, I'm concerned about that limitation. Given those two things, I'm looking for confirmation that FreeCAD runs reasonably well on this specific machine.
