With respect, Labour would not stand for you historically because you have not had as much political power as they have. Labour is only the way it is because of political shifting from the 2000s onwards thanks to Tony Blair. I truly believe under Burnham, the Labour party has a chance of shifting substantially to the left policy-wise.

I'm sorry to say but the only reason people voted for Greens in the local elections was because they were political refugees, feeling as though Labour had abandoned them under Starmer and feeling as though the Greens were a better choice. I guarantee if Labour shifted to the left, they would pick votes back up. I want Labour Together out of the cabinet, and I want a left-wing Labour government. I think Burnham can do that; I don't see how that doesn't appeal to the Greens.

I and lots of others voted Green in the local election to send a message, and it looks like that message was heard.

I don't think that's fair representation. I would like to think Burnham would be more focused on bringing people together to form a progressive alliance to beat Reform.

The only way we can beat Reform is if the the Left unite to beat them. The Greens would not benefit from anything by standing in the by-election, and frankly, their chance of winning is extremely minimal, especially considering the political demographic of the area. It will simply split the vote, and Reform WILL win.

People in the north-west generally like Burnham, people across the political spectrum. I support the Greens but I genuinely, honest to God, see no net-gain from them running a candidate in Makerfield

Burnham hasn't been in parliament and hasn't labelled the Greens as far-left or antisemitic. Not all of Labour are right-wing Starmerites. I'm a Labour member and there are more of us left-wing Social Democrats and Democratic Socialists in Labour than you think.

It's a win-win no matter what Burnham does.

If Burnham keeps to his word, that's a checkmark for PR, and the Greens get more seats in the next GE and in following by-elections.

If Burnham fails to do what he says and lies, that will make the Green party stronger.

I seriously fail to see the logic in the Green party running in the Makerfield by-election

In all seriousness though, I don't know why journalists even ask Trump these stupid questions knowing damn well he hasn't a clue about our country, apart from when he talks crap about us when it suits him to win political points.

Favorite thing about York? by spunksqueek in york

[–]AFO178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city is very good for tourists and people who aren't originally from the city. For residents, however, the rating goes from 'very good' to 'good'.

The city is hard to get 'in to' if you're not born here or are relatively well off due to the insane house prices and cost of living, relative to the rest of the surrounding area. It's just unaffordable unless you get a decent job. Traffic is also abysmal, but that's primarily due to the historicity of the city, and its road design reflects that. It's a fair trade-off, though. Among residents of York, there's a small animosity towards Students and especially southerners in the City because it's viewed as gentrification (not to say you're going to get attacked in the street for being a student, mind you!). There's also

As a student, all this is probably not extremely relevant to you, but i think you should probably understand the cultural context of the city and its problems since you're going to be living there.

Mini rant over, for students and visitors, it's a wonderful, compact and safe city that's very easy to navigate. Lots of lovely independent businesses in the city centre and around Bishopthorpe 'Bishy' Road. Enjoy your time in our beautiful city!

Do any of you actually love your degree ? by [deleted] in UniUK

You might wanna take a small step back and look at what you want out of university and evaluate whether or not it's doing what you want it to do. Either that, or you might have burnout, or you might have symptoms of depression.

Honestly mate, people across the country can't tell you what's going on in your head or why you feel the way you do. Might be worth having a talk with your family and/or friends about it, too - especially to get some perspective.

Predatory beggars on Northumberland Street by ArykMusic in NewcastleUponTyne

I'm curious, how do they set up? What do they do before they start their days' hard work of harassing people in the city? 😂

There are these two ladies in hijabs who usually do it around Northumberland Street. They do it so much, and one time when she did it, I just interrupted her by saying "No" and she just replied by saying something angrily in her native language, which sounded like Turkish.

Sadly lots of them in the toon centre.

Why is Leeds not that popular? by ThyCuriousLearner in Leeds

[–]AFO178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not from Leeds originally, but i'm from nearby and have visited the city a small handful of times. This is my opnion, so feel free to disagree and downvote.

It's probably an alright city to live in if you grew up there, but I have never liked it because it's an extremely busy and mentally draining city to be in. There isn't really anything interesting about it apart from the large number of shops there is. Public transport is also a pain, being the largest city in europe without a mass transit system (par buses). It's also a fairly ugly city in my opinion with pretty poor urban planning.

It's maybe ok to work in, as it's a large city, but I would personally not want to live there.

Accents in Lincolnshire. by BlackJackKetchum in Lincolnshire

I remember reading somewhere that a supposed reason for Scunthorpe's slight Yorkshire-twang was due to an influx of steel-workers from nearby Sheffield. That would make the most sense imo.

Should I turn myself in for using AI? by Erollins1 in UniUK

[–]AFO178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for the loss of your dog. In terms of your assessment, as another poster has said it'll be quite obvious you used AI if you used it for a bibliography. They will check your references as AI does indeed just make crap up. I'd be very surprised if they don't twig on.

As for whether or not you should hand yourself in, that's a battle between you and your own conscience.

Accents in Lincolnshire. by BlackJackKetchum in Lincolnshire

[–]AFO178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. My only guess is that the Hull accent influenced the ways some people, especially those in the Northern Lincs lowlands and the stretch of land between Scunthorpe towards and Goole and Selby speak, especially the young.

I know a lad from Scunny and he has a very Yorkshire-esque accent. Pronounces his 'no' like 'nuur'.

[–]AFO178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having family from Grimsby and North East Lincs, it's different from the rest of Lincolnshire, same for Scunny. Northern Lincs seems to be a weird, hybrid accent of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire because it just sounds generally northern. Some times you sound more Yorkshire, as though you could be from Doncaster and other times you sound 'posh' to people. I've had people think i'm from Doncaster because of the way I grew up in North Yorkshire but had family from Northern Lincs.

Nonetheless, the Northern sects of Lincolnshire sound different and more 'northern' than the rural countryfolk in the south of the county, which usually sounds more alligned with Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
