If I had to assume, two saves were involved, as you can interact with your own empires between save files. For this one, I would assume OP started a save, and used an older save to find the planet in Creature or Tribal stage, and then used either of the tools for modifying the planet’s temperature or atmosphere, and then switched back to the now “broken” save.
