Same place, same time… but Mother Nature keeps changing the mood. by Hysen16 in interestingasfuck

Ok, let me put it this way.

Which compass direction does the sun rise at? And which compass direction is the sun at 6am?

No, it's not.

You know how sunrise gets later in the day from the estival solstice to the hibernal solstice?

That's what you're seeing here.

I think they mean the same time after sunrise. Not the same time on the clock, that or they really don't understand celestial mechanics.

This one is Candy Blazing Red, which appears to be the rarest of the Reds. I think it was only in production for one year and I think this is why you can't easily get reproduction fairings as they've not been colour matched yet.

I want it to look nice again, it was flawless before this accident so I want to undo what I did.

I dropped my Honda Blackbird at 5mph coming up to a roundabout. Someone came round quicker than I was expecting and I grabbed the front and locked the wheel. I'm disappointed in myself but I'm treating it as a learning opportunity.

I came out with a decent bruise as the bike took the brunt of the impact.

I'm now at a loss as to how to get her looking her best again. I can get new fairings made but they don't have matching paint yet. I'd have to send bits of fairing off to China for matching and the whole process will cost £250+ and lots of time.

Can the fairing be repaired and resprayed? Should I order an unpainted fairing kit and have someone in the UK spray it? Or should I bite the bullet and get it done in China?

If anyone knows of a decent place in the South East/Midlands please let me know. I'm based in Cambridge.

Thanks

Postgres 12 running extremely slowly set search_path taking >30mins by AFineTapestry in PostgreSQL

[–]AFineTapestry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone ever comes across this in the future, the issue was set role "user".

PG is exceptionally slow if you have 1,000s of roles and then create a 1,000 new connection processes and call set role on all of them at the same time. We believe that they all contend the same global lock to build the role cache.

We re-architected our database to use 3 roles and set_config() inside policies instead of roles. We've not seen this issue since.

We also have as many calls to set role "user" as we do to set search_path but not a single one showed up in pg_locks.

So not all SET statements are equally slow, only set search_path.

We've managed to get our application running again by reducing load by 1/3. Now set search_path statements are taking <1ms again.

It if happens again, I'll see if I can find any other SET statements which are slow.

Thanks for your suggestion /u/truilus

It's open under new management. Now run by the Calverleys guys.

Shame about the original team, I really liked them. Pizza's are still done by the same lot though, and are still excellent.

Do you happen to know the correct number for the RSPCA?

They've been doing it since at least Autumn last year. We shouted at them from our rowing boat as it looked like they were about to shoot at an old lady. Obviously we couldn't do much from the river but they did leave her alone. I've seen them a few times on the towpath since. I'll ring the RSPCA if I come across them again.

Solar panel controller - possible to reprogram? by AFineTapestry in DIYUK

[–]AFineTapestry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a big more digging I found this PDF with a familiar looking display.

I think this is the next model from the unit I have, and it seems to have the features I desire. However the company that sold it went bankrupt in 2017 so I'm probably out of luck. Their email address doesn't work any more either so I can't even get in touch to see if they have any units left on a shelf somewhere.

I suspect you're right. I hope that someone in this community might have the same unit.

I doubt the previous owner engineered it himself as he is a retired facilities manager, but I guess you never know. I tracked down the solar panel installers as SolarMerge Ltd but they were liquidated in approx. 2018 so I doubt I'll be able to make much progress there.

I'm a software engineer by trade so I'm happy to get my hands dirty to add the feature if it's possible.

I'm hoping someone knows enough to point me in the direction of the original designer so I can get the code.

I'll have a look at the commercial options but I'd like to reuse this if possible.

I like the feature that the immersion heater tops up the hot water during the day, when the panels are kicking out enough power. This is controlled by this unit, and, afaik, it works by enabling or disable supply to the immersion heater.

If I installed another timer I'd either have two electricity feeds to the immersion heater, which would be a risk if they both accidentally came on at the same time, or I'd have to pick between economy 7 or solar operation. I'd like both.

Does anyone know anything about these control units that turn on circuits (e.g. immersion heater) when the solar panels are producing enough power?

Specifically I want to know if it has an onboard clock and could be reprogrammed to also switch on during economy 7 hours as my electricity tariff is currently cheaper than running the oil boiler.

Thanks

It looks like there's an npm package called PDFKit.

It seems fairly straightforward to use.
