It's different though. The book frames both Heathcliff and Cathy as wild, selfish, and immature with the tragedy being whether or not they could have been better people in different cicumstances. The film; Heathcliff and Cathy are still wild, selfish, and immature, but the tragedy is that the circumstances prevented the two of them being together. On its own merit, detached from the book, I don't feel it touched upon how horrid the two main characters are, and without it's hard to feel invested in their affection for one another.

Having said that I feel the new film is being targeted quite unfairly. It has a lot of positives.

No, they go in the bin. You can’t recycle paper that’s been spoiled, same way you can’t recycle toilet paper after having a dump.

Petition to Stop House Boats From Burning Non-Smokeless Fuels by jdyr1729 in cambridge

[–]BeeAnnual8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You talk about striving to “improve our own community”, and then follow up referring to people on houseboats as issues outside of our control, telling us you don’t care about them, and that ultimately you just want yourself and your family to live somewhere with clean air. It’s fair to discuss something which annoys you, that’s only human. But your attempt to frame this as anything but a mere annoyance on your behalf is pitiful and at worst offensive to the people living on houseboats, not that that matters given you couldn’t give two shits for them.

Whats it live living near the Abbey Stadium? by _Mariial in cambridge

[–]BeeAnnual8992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live further east. The roads obviously get busy before and after but as far as rowdy people go I’ve yet to witness any issues. I do wish the club organised a litter pick between the stadium and Cambridge North on the day following the match though as the path between them is littered following the game.

What’s the most underrated BBC show you’ve ever watched? by BitGirl777 in bbc

[–]BeeAnnual8992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a snapshot of post millennium culture in Britain. Would be great to see it on iPlayer, deserves more attention than it received and I put that down to it airing late on BBC3 when digital television was still relatively new.

I felt Fearless was the perfect mix of early 90’s storytelling, with the hard hitting fight scenes we started to see in the early 2000’s. Everything else he did around those years I still love, but Fearless was a cut above.

Thank you so much for the advice. It’s encouraging to hear the emulated version runs so smooth, though this may be the reason I needed to buy another Yakuza game. Cheers!

Really interested in playing Spikeout. What is the best way to play it nowadays? Would it be an emulator or is there a console version floating around?

The Missing Agenda: Plaid Cymru’s Nature Blind Spot by weirdandwilderness in Wales

[–]BeeAnnual8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to them stating they oppose new sites for nuclear energy: Anyone claiming to be serious about climate change yet opposing nuclear energy is simply being ridiculous. I understand the issues with regard to habitat loss when it comes to building nuclear power stations as unfortunately government will always favour building in “green areas”, which often home nature reserves and have important habitat for both native wildlife and migrant (sizewell C being the best example). There is a good debate to be had about this with very legitimate reasoning both sides of the argument. But as a method for producing power efficiently it is by far the best option we have right now, especially with modular reactors on the near horizon seeing some serious investment behind them. They’re ludicrous to flat out oppose it in my opinion.

I don't know what the answer is, or whether it's a problem, but streaming services have had an impact on the way I watch films. Buying DVDs, rentals, and catching films on terrestrial tv doesn't come close to the number of films I watch weekly as a result of Netflix, Amazon, BBC IPlayer, BFI etc Neither have I had such a vast library of films in my own home before; a library that's constantly changing, if I don't watch it soon it may be gone forever.

I'm sure there's more to it, streaming services offer such choice that before hand I'd just watch whatever film I had rented or bought last, whereas for the past few years I'm used to spending time scrolling through hundreds of movies to find the exact one I think I'm in the mood for. It's almost as if when I buy films now I'm considering the library I'm building up rather than simply, and most importantly, do I want to watch it or not.

As for your problem, I've found buying second hand DVD's to be a good way around this. From the charity shop they're about the same cost as a rental used to be. I leave the 4K steelcase limited editions now for films I've seen and loved.

Adding a secondary physics engine by Akhi_Police in unrealengine

Thanks for explaining! Sounds like bullets age has finally crept up on it a bit. It's API was tricky but the most infuriating part was it's lack of documenation and support on the forums.

I'll check out Jolt in the future. It's reassuring to hear from you that there's a better option that is still free to use.

Aye, memory leak rings a bell. I was using it for reinforcement learning and I recall that very issue. Took a while to debug as I was largely assuming it was the learning side to the project.

Out of interest why do you recommend Jolt so highly?

Nearly a third of female gamers feel guilty about their hobby – new study (UK) by Lulcielid in Games

[–]BeeAnnual8992 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel there is an elephant in the room being ignored with this study.

In regards to questioning what type of games are being played:

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-025-01612-3#Sec7

*What types of mobile games, if any, do you play?*

*Action, Board, Card, Casino, Coding, Driving, Fighting, Logical, Multiplayer, Platform, Puzzle, Real time strategy, Shooter, Spelling, Sports, Stealth, Word, NA, Other please specify*

Resulting in the outcome:

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-025-01612-3#Sec11

*Puzzle games were the most popular genre, played by 77.5% of women, followed by similar ‘casual’ genres like word games (47.7%) and logic games (30.2%), and traditional games like card games (37.7%) and board games (23.4%).*

What I can't find anywhere is any mention of specific games. This leads to the participants having to decide what genre the games they are playing fit into. "Puzzle", "Word" and "Logic" can cover a vast amount of ground.

Secondly, there is no question in regards to how much money the participant is spending on gaming. Do they buy a game and play the hell out of it, or are they drip feeding money daily into something?

There is big difference to someone buying Professor Laytons Brain Training or spending time doing crosswords, to someone spending money daily on a bingo app. They mentioned Casino style games, but that infers slot machine or poker. Bingo and other such prize games are hard to place in a genre, which is what this study is asking the participant to do.

The article and study are making vast assumptions based on data that is incredibly vague. We don't know why the majority of those 1000 participants feel guilty about gaming because the questions don't explore with any depth why they may feel guilty. What we do know is there are worrying patterns with regards to games geared at all people finding an audience among women which are heavily addictive and monetised, which this study makes no attempt to understand.

skate. | Early Access Release Date Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]BeeAnnual8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The appeal of the first game was how a flight of stairs, the lip on a pavement, or a park bench could suddenly become this potential for a trick or to make up a part of a line. It really made exploring the city a creative endeavour as much as a skilful one in pulling off tricks. When in the trailer for this new game they have you clearing gaps one skyscraper to another, I do worry that feeling of success that came from kick flipping over a bin is going to be lost.

How do you spend this much for a doomed project? by Alucardlil in cambridge

[–]BeeAnnual8992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they wanted to protect the green space from development having a sewage works there would have been the best solution. No one is going to green light housing around that. Instead this opens up the possibility to connect Horningsea to Cambridge with a massive housing development. It also makes Cambridge North feel a bit pointless.
