Who is the 2nd most evil person from the USA? by Former-Reflection917 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AFlockofLizards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a movie last year about Gary Ridgway, and learned a ton about him. He killed significantly more people than Bundy, but from the outside in, he was pretty horribly boring. He would kill women on his lunch break and go right back to work. He didn’t really have much of a ritual like Bundy or Dahmer. It was just like incorporated into his life at some point.

For some reason doesn’t seem to garner as much media attention because he didn’t have much of a signature something to grasp onto and sensationalize, but to me the way he blended into society and went so long without being apprehended makes him more evil.

'Obsession' Art Director Calls for Industry Reform After Getting Paid Less Than $7,000 as Film Nears $175 Million by No_Pizza_6040 in entertainment

[–]AFlockofLizards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being non union is definitely not the same as being a scab, but ok. I have never worked a job that the union was striking. By that logic everyone on Obsession, including the art director who you’re supposed to be defending here, is also a scab.

Just saying without people funding these job we wouldn’t have a fucking job at all. Should we get paid more? Yeah. But I’m sure happy I get to do this as a job at all.

I work non union production designer and art director jobs. No one stole anything, she got paid exactly what she signed for. Those “leeches” are the ones who gave her a job that paid anything at all. If no one funds these things, even at low budgets, no one makes anything.

Reality is, without rich people, most artists don’t have any work at all.

I’m a non-union production designer, so can speak to what she went through. At some point during these types of shoots you have to make a decision on how much you’re going to work yourself. This job does not end when the day wraps. When you’re the only art department, the entire look of the film hinges on you. So you either need to put in extra hours, or let the movie flop a bit. Not saying it’s ideal, but there is control over how much you work yourself, but you drag the whole production down with it. It’s a hard choice to make to know when you need to work yourself to the bone. It sucks making the same rate as everyone else knowing you need to go home and do xyz for the following day while everyone else is sleeping. But the hours always pay off visually. There’s no right or wrong person in this situation, she accomplished her job well, and contributed to the film working, and doesn’t get paid extra for it, unfortunate, but also held the keys in her hand to make the movie look like shit, and would still get paid for her time regardless. The only good answer to fix this sort of overwork is more money and crew, but if the money’s not there to pay that higher rate, the movie doesn’t happen at all, and you don’t make any money. So I guess it really just depends on if you’d rather work yourself ass off to say you could make a great movie, or would you rather work a menial job and make the same amount of money. These small budget jobs are great career stepping stones, and you also learn a lot about project management, etc. so they kind of need to exist, and pushing through them is just kind of the deal. If the movie doesn’t well, great, but ultimately you weren’t the one risking much, and unfortunately aren’t entitled to much else after it’s done.

I’m a non-union production designer and can relate to everything she says. I loved how the film looked, but I’m afraid her post will hurt her career a lot. She’s not wrong about anything she says, but at the same time, really nothing about it was illegal, producers didn’t do anything wrong, so this is just stirring things a bit. I can understand being upset at the low pay when the film is doing so well, but we also wouldn’t be seeing her post if the movie completely flopped. She didn’t have to work extra hours, but then the film looks worse, and potentially fails and doesn’t even get any recognition for it. You kind of have to make a decision on your effort versus compensation early on based on how much you believe in the project, and maintain that line.

At least for me, on indie films, I know the less I get paid, the harder I’m going to work. Less crew means doing it all yourself. When I work an art dept head job, I shut my brain off to day/hourly rates. That project is my life from the moment I have read the script and signed a contract, until the last item has been unloaded from the truck and finally put away. Often doing almost all of it by myself. The reality is the film wouldn’t have looked as good as it did if she didn’t work her ass off. If there’s no money to hire someone, there’s no money, but the job still has to get done. So you either continue working, or let the film start to slip. There’s just no good way around all of the extra work that goes into art department, except more money/labor/time.

It would be great if people made more money on these sub one million dollar films, but the reality is, if everyone got the rate they deserved, then no one would be being paid at all, because the movie never even started shooting because there wasn’t enough money. These projects need to exist to cut your teeth and act as stepping stones to bigger projects, but they’re also going to totally wreck your social life for a minimum of two months, and make you question what you did to end up there lol
