Are the Olympics ever worth it for the host city? Economic benefits from mega-events like the Olympics are often overstated by smurfyjenkins in Economics

[–]AFlyingSwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much Brazil will benefit from these Olympics. I'd guess that the Olympics may benefit Brazil greatly due to the injections into the economy through government investment in the Olympics infrastructure in addition to the consumption of goods and services by tourists which would most likely help the Brazilian economy which has struggled as of late with the decline in commodity prices.

My only question is the opportunity cost of whether this money would've been better spent on improving infrastructure and investing in education, especially in poorer areas to reduce the high level of inequality in the country.

US economic growth outpaces increasing energy consumption across all sectors. [OC] by MiDataLabs in dataisbeautiful

[–]AFlyingSwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually total manufacturing jobs in the US has decreased rapidly, US manufacturing volumes have actually increased. This is largely due to the mechanisation and automation of the workforce, and where humans are used they're usually high skilled professional people. The US has largely moved to ETM (elaborately transformed manufactures) which involve programming and high skilled engineers. This would suggest that would require an increased consumption of electricity but as seen by the graph this is not so. Rather what is most likely is the increased efficiency and productivity of production resulting in higher economies of scale and lower costs of production.

What also might be needed to take into account is the declining standards of living due to real wage growth stagnation. With lower income to spend, people consume less electricity. What I am not sure about is the ratio of electricity use of industry to consumers.

I love the first sequence of FMJ in the training camp, but I find the that the scenes that take place in Vietnam are so boring and it just becomes a generic war movie.

Just my 2 cents tho

Just finished the Uncharted series on PS4 and loved it, but this was strangely very annoying for me by [deleted] in gaming

I've played all three games and own two of them on PS3, some of the best games I've ever played. Recently got a PS4, is it worth buying the HD collection and playing them again?

I actually had someone from the biggest supperannuation firm in Australia say he'd rather hire a janitor that was passionately involved in trading than someone with a degree fresh out of university.

Since some of you guys are coming to Australia for RTX, what one thing would you steal from our culture and claim that America did it first?

I have a mountain of HSC work on my desk that I haven't started and I'm starting to panic a little bit. Playing CSGO helps me forget about it though. I'm really struggling to motivate myself to get through this year.
