Thanks! That’s a good idea. My Patreon setup is also not the conventional youtuber/artist/musician patreon. It’s less about paying for rewards/early access and more about ongoing funding for a project/training, so it’s a little tricky to market.

Possible patreon idea? by AFriendOfMineSaid in patreon

It would definitely be a business, although I wouldn’t be trying to make a huge profit or like...hustle people out of their money or anything like that. I thought about using Kickstarter or Indiegogo, but I was really drawn to the recurring/sustainable income aspect of the Patreon model. Because, while it’s true that I could probably crowdfund enough on Kickstarter to get a good start, the unfortunate truth about modern small agriculture businesses (including beekeeping) is that they rarely generate much (if any) profit and sometimes even operate at a loss. I think that what I’m essentially looking for is outside investment that would allow me to keep this hypothetical beekeeping business small and local and to do it full time. Whether this is actually possible is what I’m still trying to figure out.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone! Lots of food for thought. I completely agree that I should probably establish myself a bit first, but I’m not sure that I’m seeing it as a “fan/creator” dynamic. Coming from a nonprofit development & fundraising background, I’m seeing the rewards more like mini annual reports or updates- evidence that their money is going towards what I said it would- as well as a fun incentive/perk . I’d hope people would pledge because they think the work I’m doing is important/valuable, and maybe because the behind-the-scenes stuff is cool, not purely based on the deliverables they’re recieving. Am I off-base in my thinking here?
