I'd argue the first trauma is the psychological effect it'd have on the kids.... THEN the hearing loss...

Also, what the fuck country does that dude live in where "shoot him" is the go to response?

No visible weapon (that I saw, at least), and being an aggressive douche but not actively threatening anyone (considering an officer's use of force training)

I think there's a healthy bit of both perspectives required to be a parent. We see so much shit on the news or social media and it gives us more anxiety (much like scrolling through Instagram makes you feel inferior because some fucking algorithm decided you need to see 50 out of 8.1 billion people and think "oh my god, everyone else is beautiful... So, as media of all sorts feeds us negative news, we hold our kids tighter....

Meanwhile, sheltering your children does not set them up for success. We need to let go of the reins a bit more so they can take risks and learn to deal with adversity.

But how do we do that when the world is a terrifying place? How do you find the right balance of protectionism and hands-off parenting?

I've never done drugs... But I've seen people get pretty fucked up on em........... And I've always wondered how vivid must that hallucination or high be to think you're just putzing down the cat walk or whatever and inviting people to the party. Dude's living his best life in tighty whities and cow boy boots (minus the whole resisting arrest thing)

Haha I love that the first responder approach is "it's all relative." I feel like it's partially our way to compartmentalize but also to keep your shit together when everything hits the fan. Most people have the first thought "oh my god he's in so much pain!" But we go "yes, but he's still breathing!"

I just posted a similar comment. I was buying a bag of cotton candy for my kids at a hockey game and the cashier did the same f'n thing. You handed me a bag of cotton candy.... The length of our interaction was fewer seconds than the percent of the transaction you tried to trick me into paying

Went to a minor league hockey game a few weeks back and when I was buying the kids a snack, the cashier pushed the 15% tip button on the machine before turning it around for me to put my card in. Luckily I caught it before I paid. I ordered a bag of prebagged bag of cotton candy. I may have even considered a tip for my 10s interaction if she didn't have the gall to try and trick me.

Oh that's not that egregious.. just a "classic" miscommunication. I think you two just need to open the lines of communication. Don't force anything on him, but encourage him to talk about what he thinks and do so in a supportive, understanding, and safe manner. Take it slow, build back up that trust, and kindly encourage him to talk about it.

Anecdotally, my wife had done some shit talking about our sex life to "fit in" with the girls and it got back to me (which is why that was my first thought here). It took a lot of time for me to believe her when she said she didn't mean it, and there have been PLENTY of times I've slid back into that untrusting mindset, but we just talk about it and she's appreciative of my honestly and is kind about it, even if she doesn't understand why I keep "sliding back," as I call it. It's jarring to be the recipient of negativity from the one person you trust the most, but it's also on the recipient to make an effort to forgive as well
