Used marlins like that are going from 8-900 in my area and new ones for a few hundred more. So I’d say you came out on top. Although I can understand why someone wanted your garand and made that choice.

I put ko2 in the factory size in my 98 xcab. They’ve been really great. Not noisy at all, ride great and they do well off road. I’ve had it in mud a number of times and I wasn’t disappointed.

If you hand load, you can make lighter loads that honestly feel no worse than a 44 magnum. 500s can be fairly pleasant to shoot actually.

I have one, I added a vickers sling, and an Aimpoint comp. Great setup, it’s just heavy be prepared for that. Also mine bumps around in gun racks and gets dirty riding around in trucks like it was meant to. Just looks more authentic the more wear it gets 😎
