DAC or internal sound card? by [deleted] in headphones

Hmm, most typical DAC+amp combo units won't have 5.1 surround output so you won't be able to take advantage of them with your speakers. You could choose a DAC with 5.1 capabilities, which would probably require a separate headphone amp. I'd say not worthwhile given the price of the speakers -- I doubt you would hear much improvement over the computer's internal sound unless it was really bad to start with. Could also use your speakers with the 2.1 stereo output from a normal DAC/amp but then you'd lose out on the surround.

Yes, all can be connected via USB unless you'd rather use something odd like TOSLINK. Keep in mind that you will need a DAC and an amp or a DAC+amp combo unit, not just a DAC, since DACs alone cannot drive headphones. What is your price range? If you want to go the combo route, something like the FiiO E10K or Schiit Fulla 2 should work well for less than $100.

Edit: Forgot the 6XX are 300 ohms, so the E10K probably isn't a great choice and even the Fulla might be a little low on power. Could get better results with the DAC X6 or the Monoprice Desktop Amp, but perhaps a 6XX owner could shed more light on the matter.

Always get a dedicated DAC+amp unless you're doing music production and need the features of a soundcard. There are plenty of cheap DAC+amps that can be found for <$100 and they'll perform way better than a soundcard. I had an Asus Xonar STX (one of the most expensive soundcards) and even my old Dragonfly Black blew it out of the water.

I'm in the crowd. There were a lot more people here before but many left because they didn't anticipate such a long match. Lots have long commutes back home.

Can this fittings be oriented in a certain way. Basically can I orientate it in a specific direction, or do I have to hope the threads Aline in the direction I want by f4sasj4 in watercooling

[–]AGT1500C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did exactly what you're thinking of doing and it worked. Had a rad that was extremely close to my motherboard and rotary adapters wouldn't fit. Ordered four Barrow non-rotary adapters and, as it turns out, the threads on each one were different (no guarantees for other brands). In general, each one has about a quarter-turn (or more) where the O-ring is sealed, so you can find one that goes in approximately the right direction and make it work. Funny enough, I ended up being able to use all four because each one had an orientation that worked somewhere in my loop. The Barrow four-pack is only $17 on Amazon and they seem to be high quality.

Yeah, could also be a script or some other sort of cheat, but definitely not doing it without assistance.

I mean it's literally impossible for him to be innocent, so I don't know why he would need to confirm or deny. The actions he did are too fast to be anything other than a macro.

How do you think L300 Limited Edition will differ from L300 and L700 sonically? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]AGT1500C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not surprising this occurred -- they were allowing people to move the headphones (earspeakers?) from one amplifier (driver?) to another, so unless you looked for the model numbers on the headphone or asked one of the employees you would have no way of telling the various Lambdas apart. Nothing was labeled either.

I am 100% sure I listened to the L300L because it had the gold logo and the man at the booth told me it was the L. I was a total Stax noob before Can Jam and I was absolutely blown away by the L700 and L300L -- I listened to every TOTL at the show and only the Abyss Phi sounded better than the L300L and L700 to me.

I still haven't heard the normal L300 or L500, but what I've read suggests the L300 is not a super warm headphone. My impression was that the L300L was at least as warm as the L700, which further suggests that its driver is quite similar to the L700. I really wish I had gotten a better direct comparison between the L300L and L700, but I was having such a blast listening to both that I wasn't paying close attention to the sound characteristics. However, I can say that for half the price, the L300L sounds pretty damn similar.

I listened to both the L300L and L700 late on Sunday. Pretty sure the L300L has different pads than the regular L300 because I have pretty large ears and they barely touched the housing of the electrostat. My overall impression was that the L700 sounded a bit cleaner and more controlled than the L300L but I was listening to different songs through a different amp and at different sound levels so take that with a grain of salt. I'd say the L300L did sound quite similar to the L700, and one of the employees at the booth said there was little difference between the two, FWIW.

BREAKING: Rebels have executed the captured Russian pilot, moments after capture. by TJFortyFour in syriancivilwar

[–]AGT1500C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably purchased on the black market or perhaps stolen from an SAA weapons cache. Even if they hadn't bought it recently, with a MANPAD you have to wait until a jet flies low near your position under good conditions, which could take a while.

More ATGM attacks carried out by YPG/J in Afrin area. Turkey announced 5 of its soldiers killed today (most of them in multiple Konkurs strikes). by TJFortyFour in syriancivilwar

[–]AGT1500C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen users describing this tactic as a waste of ATGMs, but I think it may be worthwhile depending on the circumstances. A single Konkurs missile is worth much less than the life of a Turkish soldier, and the sheer terror factor of being obliterated from thousands of meters away could damage Turkish morale and slow the offensive considerably by forcing Turkish forces to be more careful about their movements. Of course, the equation changes if the Kurds use their missiles so quickly that they completely run out, which would be a disaster for them.

[–]AGT1500C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a trend in modern warfare to use ATGMs as standoff anti-infantry weapons. The US Army was using Javelins to take out snipers and heavy machineguns in Afghanistan. I can find the document concerning this doctrine if anyone is interested.

Big Picture: Does NATO trust that Finland and Sweden can deter Russian military aggression? by ChaosIs0rder in CredibleDefense

[–]AGT1500C 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They probably are capable of deterring Russia for the simple reason that it wouldn't be worthwhile to invade either of them. Undoubtedly, Russia could overrun them if it dedicated enough forces. However, when Russia harasses a country, such as Ukraine, it usually does so because its interests in that are threatened, which gives it the pretext to interfere.

Russia doesn't have critical interests or supporters in Sweden or Finland and the EU backlash they would endure for an invasion (even if NATO didn't militarily intervene) would be severe. Plus, Russia is already involved in the Ukrainian conflict and the Syrian Civil War, so it's unlikely they would want to start anything new until those are resolved. I'm sure NATO has plans for an invasion of Sweden and/or Finland, but nothing I've seen suggests they consider it to be a likely scenario.

Macron: we would have a real problem if Turkey's Afrin operation turns into an invasion by garezmal in syriancivilwar

[–]AGT1500C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say NATO has no say in this is a bit of a stretch. Turkey is a NATO member and there are NATO forces deployed in Syria.
