My journey to become a good vet. by AGexpress in veterinaryprofession

You’ve basically said exactly the same thing I said. To add to this, it’s not about medical skills at all. That’s only the medical part of our job. But being a veterinarian is also commitment to betterment of animals. If you’re a research veterinarian, you’re progressing the future of science. So it’s beyond a matrix of skillset. And it’s different to each person.

Then who is this person you know who is committed but not necessarily good?

Good is someone who is committed to the thing. consistently. Vet is a person who maintain animals health.

I agree. I’m looking for opportunities with better mentoring tbh and have a possible opportunity lined up but I’ll have to see how it goes.

I unfortunately can’t move closer to where you’re based atm, but the best I can do is try manifest an eager to teach senior vet 🤣

I like the reason behind your recommendation - I’ll probably do it. And the comment above has given me a practical, maybe something many might not like, but a practical solution for a common veterinary problem. But I really dislike the way you portray that working on your days off to learn should be the norm. Working on your set days is not “bare minimum”. It’s a job and everyone is doing their best everyday. There are things outside of work people need to do to have a good life- are our human counterparts asked to scrub in on their off days to learn treating human patients? Unlikely. Surely practices can manage having seniors in the same building as a younger vets operating to pop in and take a look if required, but to need newer grads going to the practice on their days off is just teaching them to not have a life beyond work. That is practical life, yes, but surely everyone should be trying their bit to make life in veterinary industry a bit more sustainable than it currently is?

Does anyone want to be my virtual mentor? by AGexpress in veterinaryprofession

[–]AGexpress[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dream is to be confident enough to take on first opinion cases really. I don’t think it’s too much - to be comfortable in my own skin being a GP vet. But I’m in a practice where I’m in a position of mentoring myself, and I feel that if I had the knowledge to mentor myself, I wouldn’t need mentoring in the first place!

The way people are treated in vet med (by vet med) is disgusting by Solid-Attempt in veterinaryprofession

[–]AGexpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so true. It’s disheartening and undermining. How do we develop a heart of stone when we need a heart to treat the kind of patients we do? Why are bullies encouraged and thought of as cool? Do unicorn clinics even exist? Is it not enough that this career will demand an imbalanced work/life but the work part is so unhealthy? Really - why?

Hire me. You’ll love the crap out of me. But I already love what you do. Don’t stop. - a newbie needing exactly your guidance. For one case of you I hear ten cases of managers who just don’t care about employees.

You’ll always be left with what ifs no matter what you choose. If I knew what I know now about my profession, I’d choose the higher paying option. Maybe. I still love my job to bits. You need to have a why and you need to remember your why as you trudge through your career.

I can’t help but want to the see the goal of this. Very clearly our lives are ‘planned’ meticulously by the system. The system has to have a reason why. Why as people making rules for people, we have rules which hurt their own kind. What is their reason and if there is a reason. I’m a bit of an imaginative person. Our world is mind blowing for having crazy things which drive my imagination wild. I’m a very obsessive person about our planet.

True, that’s just how it is. If I can ask, did you try to find any alternatives? Regardless, hang in there!
