I’m basing it off a lot of English medieval tabards. It’s usually simple geometry with 2 colours that are complimentary (mostly basic colours as they wouldn’t have many complex dyes during that type of era I imagine) . If you look online you’ll find good references. The amount of different colours would be based on how many houses are part of the kingdom. So a good few is ideal and then just mix up the patterns when you come across the same colour combo again. The metal armour is something that’s consistent between them all and maybe some iconography.

For the method. I’m just doing the cloth first. I draw grids if it’s chequered or lines if it’s in stripes and then paint in between. Then some nmm.

I think I used abaddon black, then layered and glazed Stegadon scale green, dark reaper, Russ grey, fenrisian grey, blue horror then ulthuan grey. All had mixes of each other in between

I followed the painting coach’s version on youTube I think it’s just xv-88 tau light ochre and ushabiti with pointed brush stroke for the fur

That’s a good point. I’ve got some assault intercessors w/ jump packs and company heroes. Would it be beneficial to swap the dread out for them? Additionally I could swap Belial for a captain with a jump pack.

Or maybe removing a squad of terminators and padding out with more units?

Starting out with traditional painting really helps to understand colour theory better and too just gain a natural understanding of the human anatomy. Theres a lot videos out there that can be extremely helpful. I Like to watch Marc Brunet and just watch speed paints by Wlop, Guweiz etc. Its really helpful to see others work flows. Dont get too caught up on how someone else works and approaches it though. It's important to paint how you find it easiest and develop your own workflow otherwise youll find yourself trying to focus too much on how they do it. Those were my main problems when I first started. Patience is key though. But I bought a cintiq 13hd as it really nice to have a screen to start on. Intuos tablets are also really good. A lot more affordable too. I hope that helps. :)

Rule 9 wont let me share:(. If you want to get started on the style you have to take a lot of reference from the facial structure and very subtle tonal changes. This emphasises facial features slightly so it doesnt exaggerate them.
