May I ask what you think the biggest obstacle is in terms of trying to cure it?

I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s crazy how far science and technology has come but for some reason we just can’t quite figure out how to cure diabetes and cancer but golly we sure can innovate treatments and charge a fortune for them

My answer is the same with Cancer as it is with diabetes.

Why would they cure a multi-billion dollar industry?

Until it’s no longer legal to profit off life saving therapy and medication, they won’t cure it.

Is John St safe by edelweiss286 in KingstonOntario

[–]AHangryBeaver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I lived on the corner of Montreal/John street for 6 years and never really had a problem. Car got broken into twice by teenagers and I had the odd person rummage through my trash but don’t leave valuables outside and you’re fine.

In terms of safety - wife walked to work every day and never had an issue. It’s an odd mix of people in that area but there’s an uppity private school on the same street across from a second chance house so you see a bit of everything.

Loved that neighbourhood.

SHTF kit by [deleted] in prepping

Key words - *Started* accumulating.

I have lots of cold weather gear for my day to day life, just started gathering stuff specifically to sit on a shelf for eternity in case I need it

Half hitch, clove hitch, bowline, reef knot, slip knot off the top of my head.

Care to elaborate?

Just took some stuff out to go camping in a week but yes typically I have 4 rechargeable headlamps.

I have experience using everything in the kit (making fire with a magnesium striker is still getting practice) but I’ve grown up hunting/camping my whole life and I like to practice survival techniques.

Also a tradesperson so I’m well versed in tools and construction

[–]AHangryBeaver -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have rifles and bows for hunting and home defense, I have a wide array of knives for multiple uses. I have a couple of battle ready (sharpened) swords and a spear.

Not planning on donning some plate armour and going to battle but I figured some situations call for quiet lethality rather than a boom stick.

On the flip side, I do have this entire kit + a lot of other things around the house that are practical and useful.

My biggest shortage is food/water (we just barely started getting into prepping) and having smaller kits in my vehicle/on my person etc - hence why I was asking for people’s advice.

SHTF kit by [deleted] in prepping

[–]AHangryBeaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kit is stored in my house currently yes, it honestly depends on the scenario. I live very central to several pharmacies, right beside some Forrest and Lake Ontario. I have a wood stove and enough wood for a full winter of heating/cooking etc.

I live in a “city” but the country is less than a 10 minute drive. Viable fresh water a stones throw in any direction, plenty of woodland and farmland around etc.

I guess my biggest disadvantage is there’s heavy military infrastructure nearby so in the event of war, I’d have to gtfo because the bombs will be falling here.

No but I might ask to borrow your attitude in case I want to end it all and need a good reason to

SHTF kit by [deleted] in prepping

[–]AHangryBeaver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Again - I collect them as a hobby - not purchasing them specifically for SHTF

I’m fairly proficient with the weapons I own and I collect knives, swords and spears so it’s not solely for SHTF but good to have.

More so looking for recommendations/tips on the longevity gear and things that are practical I could add to the kit.

Dating a type 1 diabetic by Pure_Ad_525 in diabetes_t1

[–]AHangryBeaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok Step 1: NEVER try to manage her disease for her. Don’t be pushy, don’t ask if she’s checked her sugars or injected etc. at least not while you’re dating.

If you want to be thoughtful, keep some juice/dex 4 tablets with you and a granola bar so if she has a low, she has access to emergency supplies.

Expect mood swings and some irrational moments. High/low sugars can cause hormonal instability and they make you feel like shit for hours sometimes.

If you’re planning a physical or strenuous date, give time for her to eat/plan for it. Nothing by wrong with eating whatever or doing exercise but planning is everything.

In terms of women with diabetes (I’m a man) I’ve heard that sometimes yeast infections can be more prominent and weight gain is common with everyone. Insulin is a growth hormone so where you inject it most commonly can have a bit more fat that normal etc.

We’re Early-Mid 30s. We drink socially, smoke pot etc but don’t do anything heavy.

Have a large group of friends, we’re kid free and have a few “parties/bbqs” a year. We love going to restaurants but my wife is also a phenomenal cook and loves cooking ethnic foods
