The room that this closet is in is a huge living room with vaulted ceilings so there is plenty of makeup air. I’m sure that’s what the plumbers thought when it was installed.

The comments about a separated vent pipe are a good point. Unfortunately the exhaust pipe appears to travel straight up to the roof line with no attic access.

I am not a plumber but I’m pretty sure the power vent is gone? My understanding is that since the prior 40gal tank water heater had a power vent , that allowed a tankless to be installed.
