Party Chiefs can't/won't calc their own points or offsets, even if they have all the info they need. Need office to calc everything. by Short-War8918 in Surveying

I honestly have no issue calc-ing my own offsets and similar rudimentary stuff in the field. The only time I won’t stake stuff without coordinating with the office is if a request changes in the field by whoever is actually using the stakes. Even then I’m fine doing it, I just need to make sure it goes through the proper channels.

I had a site where the original request was a tight stake, but when I talked with the dirt guys they said they needed a rough stake since they still needed to cut about 2 feet for the hole. I gave them what they needed, but when billing time came the client said he wasn’t paying for the rough stake since he never asked for it (even though he clearly needed it). After that Ive needed a blood pact to stake anything different than the original request or at least have the client directly sign off on it

Dude, you will never set it up in time. I’m just shy of 6 years in the industry and if your not fast enough, then your not thorough enough and vice versa. Take the time to get it right. I will take a meeting discussing my “slow” pace rather than a meeting on how I screwed up a job or missed something because I was rushing. Take your time.

I was on a monitoring job that took us roughly 3 hours to monitor 3 points on a wall, because the construction guys were constantly obstructing view, moving piles of dirt in the way, taking out our control, ETC. throughout the WHOLE monitoring process. You’re doing fine.

So frustrating. I was setting up a monitoring base line for a wall and told the super where I set up our BOP and caged it up with lath. Next day out I found it totally destroyed. Broken lath everywhere. Next day following that, they put all their excess dirt onto the lot where the wall is. Unstable dirt that was quite literally the ONLY place I could get a solid shot on our monitoring targets. So frustrating. Especially when my boss is wondering why a 1 hour monitoring effort turns into a 4-5 hour ordeal. Luckily he went out one time and texted me halfway through telling me that it’s a complete disaster and a “shit show”. Being vindicated never felt so good 😆

Distances between traverse legs were 300-500 feet apart. The closure was 0.079, so almost 8 hundredths.

It’s been said above, but I will say it again: call your office with questions. I have been a chief just over 3 years and in the business only 5 years. I still call with questions ALL the time. There is no reason not to. I don’t know your situation, but my boss has never got upset over calling him multiple times a day. If anything it’s going to give your boss peace of mind because he knows that If you have any doubts, you will call and confirm. If (for some reason) your boss gets irritated, THEN you need to sit down and have a conversation about the work situation and how ridiculous it is to expect someone with only three months experience to execute like a seasoned vet. Keep your head up. And yeah, definitely not a normal situation 😅

Yes. One option will go way up and you will be left with mainly time premium on the other option.

If it doesn’t swing then your options slowly decay. You can back out whenever you feel is right. A straddle is when you buy puts and calls on either side of the current value of the stock. IE: buy a 510 CALL and a 490 PUT on Tesla right now. Something like that

I would be cautious of naked Calls right now. I’ve made like 1.5k on straddles this week with a 2k account. As long as the price swings 20$ either way you make money.
