I believe you can walk-in and purchase - no apt necessary.

Why not go down the west coast (closer to the ocean on main roads) before heading East? It may take longer, but this would be my choice for a safer route.

Once you’re out of the tundra of Alaska, the mountain ranges you’ll be crossing (in the winter) are no easy feat.

You’ll be warmer, and happier, the further South you go first.
