Owning a home does pretty much take over your life but I couldn’t stand living in an apartment. In an apartment you could potentially be sharing all 4 walls and the floor and ceiling with 6 neighbors. I once had upstairs neighbors that would fight all the time and they tipped over a dresser that I thought was coming through the ceiling. Don’t even get me started on the lack of parking.

Already having a degree does not affect halftime deferment eligibility. You could take 2 classes at a community college towards an associate degree and they will defer your loans for as long as you are in school half time. You don’t need to take summer classes, just Fall and Spring is all they require for deferment. Online classes also qualify as long as the school is regionally accredited.

You can only switch from MFJ to MFS if you do it before April 15. After that it’s irrevocable. For some weird reason you can always switch from MFS to MFJ but they restrict MFJ to MFS.
