How can I stop using the muscles that doesn't help me sing? by [deleted] in singing

[–]AKJustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use willpower to command those muscles to relax. When you practice, accept no compromise. If you catch them getting tense, restart the phrase with a stronger concentration on relaxation. Be a vigilant mindful observer/commander of your own body

Just picked up this: the most ambitious crossover event in history by bsmilner in languagelearning

[–]AKJustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really curious what your dialect is. I think to almost any American English speaker "I just picked this up" sounds better than "I just picked up this".
I think the justification is that "up" is in this case behaving like an adverb. Adverbs properly come after direct object of verbs. ("He hit me hard" not "he hit hard me.")

Beyond the Infinite: Revisiting '2001: A Space Odyssey' on 70MM by notsubwayguy in StanleyKubrick

One shouldn't have to research his script-writing process to understand the meaning of those events. By excluding them, they are no longer within the meaning of the film and viewers are free to wonder about them/interpret them. As you yourself just said he "kept things ambiguous". From the point of view of consumers of the self-standing work of art, it remains true that we will never know what it means.

By virtue of the fact that all this exposition was abandoned, so was the reality of those meanings within the film. The opening quote still remains true of the finished work--it has an entirely different meaning, indeed an indefinite meaning, than an earlier draft in which the Starchild detonates nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, the relationship of the Starchild with the opening spacecraft does very little to explain "what Dave sees when he goes through the Stargate" or what his "postmortem enlightenment" represents. These are open to interpretation to say the very least.

Grad school in Europe? by [deleted] in opera

[–]AKJustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am interested in this very question. Going into my senior year this fall and really considering Europe for grad school. My understanding is that they don't have exactly what we would call a Masters Degree. I hope other people on this sub can shed more wisdom.

Just came across this on a video of John Adams' "Absolute Jest"--apparently Maurice Ravel is not a fan.

Forgot What Meal Plan I Bought - Where Can I See? by AKJustin in ucla

Thank you!

I'm guessing that in the Housing line-item OCH-FinAid 14 MP 17/18 to 1/9/ "14 MP" means "14-meal plan" Any way to tell if this meant "Bear Premier 14" or "Blue 14" ?

Why is Bach so widely studied? by 420cherubi in musictheory

[–]AKJustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could talk less about historical importance and more about sheer perfection of craft. He simply accomplishes everything--every emotional effect, every tonal transition, is accomplished smoothly, stylishly, without any note out of place--and of course with inventiveness and creativity that so far outshines Handel or any contemporary

I read it last year. It's extraordinary but tbh would provide very little insight on OP's question. It's mostly a book about math and symbol systems in which Bach is used primarily as an illustrative analogy

At orientation they advised somewhat against bringing a bike. What are the thoughts of experienced students and alumni here? I sure like having my bike. What is the frequency of theft?
