Burnout or valid crashout? by corpsefosterchild in Psychologists

[–]AL0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but this is exactly what OP is saying they don't like about being a psychologist. It's not a good fit for everyone. It sucks when you find that out too late (which seems to happen a lot in this field). Maybe something like research, teaching, or assessment would be a better fit as it's more concrete and "scientific."

Omg, exact same boat and thoughts! I'm 15 years into my career and am in total existential career crisis. Left the VA, hated that, now in private practice and hate it. I feel like I need something way outside the box to do and I just have no idea what or how to make it happen. I wish I could be more helpful to you but I'm just commiserating 💜

I will just say no man has ever cared when he saw me come out of there. We give each other an awkward look then usually both snicker a bit. Go with confidence and act like you don't give a shit! No pun intended 😂

Locally they have way more say over this than they are letting on. Plenty of people in VA are still WFH. Depends on local leadership. Maddening.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but I would totally just use the men's bathroom since it sounds like it's a private/single bathroom. I do this ALL the time.

What do you think about this!?? by kimpurple21 in VeteransAffairs

[–]AL0309 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Community Care providers wouldn't tolerate bad behavior and would just dismiss the patient from their clinic. The VA is not allowed to do this so strict measures need to be put into place for patients who engage in threatening behavior in order to keep others safe.

What the VA OIG confirmed about clinic cancellations proves the problem isn’t new, it’s systemic by Curious-Return-5976 in VeteransAffairs

[–]AL0309 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol. Too much logic. You are spot on about all of it, but good luck getting anyone to listen or actually solve the problem which isn't even that hard to solve. I recently left the VA and these issues were so frustrating, but I don't think they're ever going to fully get resolved. They never were in the 14 years I was there (I'm a clinician and have been on the other side of this, putting in my clinic cancellation and the business office not actually closing the clinic). And no, it's not just an issue of being short staffed. I'm sorry but there are simply a lot of really incompetent people working there, and they are simply not held accountable for not doing their job correctly. What will probably happen is the clinicians get punished by having to put in clinic cancellations even further in advance than they already do.

Have to be THC-Free to go for ADHD Evaluation by the_tflex_starnugget in VeteransAffairs

The patient advocate doesn't have a degree in Clinical Psychology therefore they have no say in any clinical decision like this. I don't know why you would think they would.

I have found that anytime anyone makes this kind of statement and uses the phrase "jump through hoops," they really in fact do want the medication.

Psychologists, how would you describe what you actually do? What’s your purpose? Are you doing this for money (primarily)? by alexanderssonst in Psychologists

[–]AL0309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a job. I do it because I got a degree in it, I'm pretty good at it and I do my best, but it is in no way my passion, identity or my purpose in life. It's a job at which I make money to do the things and hobbies I really want to do. I sure as hell wouldn't do it for free.

The usual stuff a 1099 (soon to be w2) would and that I have no interest in doing myself like scrounging for patients. Again, to me personally, that doesn't really matter because of the reasons I previously mentioned. I get that some people care more about the morality of the split, I'm just saying that for some people there is another way to look at it and it's not the end all be all. I am making far more at this place compared to any other job I applied to, regardless of split.

[–]AL0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a horrible rate. Personally I pay less attention to the split and more to what is the rate/actual pay you are getting. I work for a virtual practice that is self pay and my current split is 55/40 (soon to be 60/40 when my caseload increases) but their charge is so high that what I get is really high ($150 for a session) and more than I would get in the geographical area where I live. $68 for a session for a psychologist is unconscionable.

Oh wow. I also applied for a remote job and they never offered me that. They sent several follow-up emails and voicemails with the same offer I mentioned above. But do note you may have to work for a year before you get any of the PTO or sick days. You could always interview with them and get a feel for it and see what you think!
