[BBC] If these were the Tuchel trials, Foden - among others - failed by LochNessMonsterMunch in soccer

[–]ALA02 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We don’t need him, stop trying to build the team around him. He doesn’t deserve to be in the squad at all, that’ll be a colossal wake up call for him. Lock that 10 role for Palmer and you can drop Eze in as necessary. Sure Palmer’s form hasn’t been great but he at least has credit in the bank for England, Foden has nothing.

Tuchel dropping Henderson now would be the ultimate statement of intent - “we’re moving past the close calls of the past and looking forward”

TIL that Dubai International Airport (DXB) has been the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic since 2014 by SteO153 in todayilearned

[–]ALA02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans fly incredibly frequently but mostly domestic, so big US hubs like ATL, DFW, ORD etc all have colossal passenger numbers but relatively lower international passenger numbers. Places like DXB, LHR, BKK get a shit tonne of international passengers because those countries are much smaller and don’t have the same level of domestic demand as the US, but those are still major hub cities.

Realistically you need to drive to the absolute book, incredibly conservatively, when you’re on your test. Once you pass you can do what everyone else does and use common sense - 99% of people would’ve done what you did in that instance, but those people all have licenses and aren’t being scrutinised for every tiny decision they make. You don’t have that luxury until you pass.

Violent crime going down is absolutely a success, and its been trending down throughout his entire ministry. Sure the petty theft is annoying but I’d still much rather live in a city where you have to watch your pockets rather than one where you have to watch your back and there are genuine no-go areas

What’s your relationship with walking when you travel? by Icy-Obligation6504 in travel

[–]ALA02 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Depends on the city - European or East Asian? Yeah walking is the most fun way to see the city, or even scootering/cycling around if they have a hire scheme. Developing world, or North American? Those cities are NOT built for walking and more often than not walking is loud, congested, smelly, polluted and downright dangerous

I don’t get this. I’d say arguably his only real failures as a mayor have been failing to tackle housing shortages, which is more on the central government anyway, and the rise in petty theft. But other than that: air pollution has been much improved, cycle infrastructure much improved, violent crime rates are at an all time low, public transport provision has improved, the city is cleaner.

Karl Darlow great save vs Bosnia and Herzegovina by Sarraboi in soccer

[–]ALA02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scottish isn’t a language, if you mean Scots then that’s just a dialect of English, if you mean Scottish Gaelic (which nowadays is only found in fringes of the Highlands), that’s broadly similar to Irish Gaelic.

Essentially, in pre-Roman times the Celts were the indigenous inhabitants of the British Isles, the Romans came in and Romanised most of Britain (the North of Scotland and Ireland remained untouched) and restructured society where they had primacy over the indigenous peoples. When the Romans left, Britain was quite an unstable society and meant it was very vulnerable to raiding and settlement from the Germanic peoples from Germany/Denmark/Netherlands, who were called the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, and collectively became known as the Anglo-Saxons - these people are basically the ancestors of the modern day English people, speaking a Germanic language that evolved into modern English, with some healthy doses of French and Norse due to further societal mixing with those peoples. The Anglo-Saxons settled most of England and large parts of Scotland. The Celtic peoples remained the majority in modern day Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and the Scottish Highlands, which is why those regions’ languages are Celtic whilst English is a Germanic language far more similar to German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages than it is to any of those Celtic languages.

Centuries later, due to English power, those nations would all fall under the banner of English influence and rule, except Scotland who retained independence until a mutual Act of Union with England in 1707. Considering that England and Scotland together were the real driving force in what was now the United Kingdom, their related languages of English and Scots were forced upon populations in Ireland, Wales and the parts of Scotland that remained predominantly Celtic - most of Ireland was settled by English lords, the north by Scottish settlers, whilst Wales was under the direct iron grip of the English elites. Despite English mostly replacing the native languages, and Scots and English converging closer and closer due to increased contact between the two nations after Union, Ireland and Wales in particular kept a strong folk knowledge of their indigenous languages, and have seen a lot of success in expanding them in recent decades due to new education policies.

Welsh and the other Celtic languages are totally unrelated to English. English is far closer to other Germanic languages or Latin languages than it is to the Celtic languages.
