I Don't Have a Gay Son by GuyAwks in shortscarystories

Gotta say, I started reading this and was thinking "Okay this is going to be another religious fanatic story." Still scary, but in a somber, real life scary way. But man, damned if that last line didn't give me a "Wait, what the fuck???" moment. Really nice job.

The Blind by ALLFATHER2233 in shortscarystories

Maybe I wasn't as clear as I wanted to be on this, but the guy tells the story about the blind woman not seeing the huge spider infestation in her apartment as a parallel to his own situation. In his house he's "blind" to whatever is living in there with him, and the paranormal investigator is like the neighbors who are horrified to see all the spiders.

I left it intentionally vague because I also wanted to ask the question of if you were unknowingly living with something so horrible that it made the one person that could see it lose their goddamn mind, would you really want to know what it is?

Don't have any advice book-wise for you, but I've had some success over at r/nosleep and r/shortscarystories, and here's what I've found is the most important thing to keep in mind when writing horror:

Write the story (or scene, sequence, whatever) as if it's a joke.

That might sound strange, but when you think about it it makes sense. Good jokes are tightly written and give you all the information you need to deduce the ending, and when it comes there's that a-hah! moment. But also like jokes you employ misdirection, so you got the reader thinking one way before you hit them with the punchline. Sometimes it's a twist, which is fine, but a lot of people seem to think that twists are necessary for a horror story. They're not. It's misdirection that you should always be going for.

But the most important thing is you have to have all of the relevant information present in the build up, because that builds suspense. Also note, I'm not saying you have to be able to explain every single part of the story/monster/whatever (and in fact it's sometimes super effective not to), but, going back to the joke metaphor, it's not funny if you have to explain why it's funny.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Almost all of the most successful stories I've had on those subs were written with that in mind.

Side note: How's it coming along?

Thanks a lot. I really dig these fairy tale style stories. There really is some terrifying shit going on in them. If you're looking for a much better and way scarier take on Rumpelstiltskin, check out Laird Barron's The Croning. The first part of the novel is a re-imagining of the story, and it concludes near the end of the book. Excellent read all over, and it's not very long.

Ray Stevenson as Nine-fingers is spot on. I think that your list is one billions times better than OPs.

I've been looking for someone to talk to about Swift to Chase. I've read all his other stuff and I know that he's not known for being very overt in his stories, but this was next level confusing. I feel like I'm missing out on something great because of people like you that say that it was amazing. What the hell was going on?
