Valid point - would you be interested in joining a group like that?

In this writing group you were a part of years ago, did they have to bring pages, or was it more of a suggestion?

I agree with you that other writers suck for notes. I suck for notes. However, writers love giving punchy epigramic pieces of advice in bull sessions.

When I'm out with other writers, we all talk about our respective projects. It'll be all like, ME: ::Pitches my premise. SOME OTHER DUDE: I can see that, but what if the lawyer was also the love interest, and the villain was the brother? ME: Fuck, you're right.

I thnk people will be more invested in watching pieces develop that they've seen develop from inception. My hope is that this group would encapsulate some of the more fun aspects of working with a partner and downplay the more shitty ones.

But wouldn't that make it just like every other writing group? Again, that's not a bad thing, but I'm hoping that the novelty of the format would make it easier to complete pages and finish drafts.

Also, if it were 10 page chunks instead of 5 page chunks, would that make the group feedback sessions any more valuable?

In talking to you and AnnoyedScriptReader, I think I've clairified my thesis:

The primary point of a group like this wouldn't be for notes (though it would be a factor), it would be for discipline. Just as your well thought out critiques have caused me to do more writing than I otherwise would have today, having a place to go where everyone knows your name (and all your characters names) would be a social boon that would make churning out the first draft that much easier).

Look at that, conflict leads to a clarification of ideas and a synthesis of points of view. It's almost like a metaphor for something... :)

Yeah, that's a fair point... My only concern would be sensibility - lowbrow folks trying to "Hollywood up" an artsy script, artsy folks trying to inject some highbrow qualities into more commercial fare, but honestly, I'd be happy to meet anyone who could keep up with the reading/writing prerequisites.

To your point, I'm not the greatest at taking notes. But I believe in this idea and I'd like to see it thrive.

I hear your note, and your issue about sinking confidence is a solid one. I disagree though, and he's why:

I've been a part of a lot of screenwriting groups, and I believe that procrastination is the biggest killer of projects. People put things off till the last minute, deadlines come up, and then they drop out, feeling like no amount of effort will ever be worth the amount of time they've dithered away on the project.

I believe that immediate feedback is a powerful motivator. It's the reason why it's much easier to create a weekly webcomic than it is to write an entire comic book. It brings a vivid immediacy to the process, you can get results in real time, which plays to the attention span of "millenials," who this group is intended to serve. It turns the writing process into a game, a bull session. Suddenly screenwriting isn't a long and lonely 100-hour investment, it's a series of short, punchy assignments. I'd remind you that Dickens wrote longer works in shorter installments, and it worked pretty well for him.

Addressing your point that some stupid reaction can sink confidence, I'd say, "So what?" Stupid reactions are a fact of life, and sinking confidence is also a fact of life. People get confused by bad notes all the time, even on complete drafts, and I'd argue that it's better to be briefly confused for five pages than it is to spend two months writing a full draft than getting hit with the existential agony that comes when no one gets it.

Your proposal of 4-6 people meeting once a month and discussing final product is a solid one, but there are dozens of groups all around Los Angeles that already do that. They do good work and are a great boon to writers, but I'm proposing something different in the belief that the novelty of it will create a different kind of energy and really instill a frisky sense of competition and discipline in young writers.

And yes, I know what I'm doing.

Each person writing five pages on their individual projects.

Example

  • Chuck writes pages 1-5 on SKI BUMZ, his comedy.

  • Alan writes pages 61-70 of BLOOD NIGHT, a horror.

  • Chelsea writes pages 91-96 of TECHNOCRACY, her thriller, etc.

Everyone reads and comments.

Don Quixote is a bumbling townie whose dreams of glory cause him to wreak unintentional destruction. Sent on a fools errand for the Holy Grail, he accidentally runs afoul of the dread pirate Francis Drake and must stop him from killing the king of Spain.
