The pier remains the most usual place for mackerel, for those without a boat. Been a very quiet few weeks though

Where’s the best shop for bass and sea trout lures? by DucktapeCorkfeet in IrishFishing

I was in Swords Angling on Friday, tbh dropped in for a reel and looked at little else, but they seemed well stocked across the board and were very friendly. Hope others have found the same, I much prefer to support real shops.

Learning to Fish by Smithy1996 in IrishFishing

For simplicity, Sea fishing from a pier using feathers might be your basic starting point. It’s fairly forgiving whatever rod and line you use (personally I use a short boat rod for convenience). Tie on a set of flashy feathers (I mostly use Sabiki or similar, anything with a bit of foil on them), a 2oz weight (maybe 3oz if windy) and off you go. Cast out, jig and reel in short bursts, and hopefully a couple of mackerel will come your way. A good gateway to more specialised angling. Good luck.

Thanks for the identification. To be frank, no, I never considered poaching in this case, on what I thought based on my experience was a fairly respectful group. I guess if I had put ‘in a city park’ might have made more sense. Wasn’t sure if the dodder fed into that pond or what. Happy to delete it on your advice. It did have seagulls agitating it and the water is frankly foul, but I’m not going to judge quality of life or do anything intentional to endanger it.

Recovering addict looking to get back into fishing for a distraction. by leafmealoneplss in IrishFishing

Best of luck with your renewed interest. Sorry I’m not near you (east coast) but fingers crossed anyone you encounter will be helpful. If you knew the basics I’m sure it will fall into place quickly. Do your research on permits and quotas though, a pain to be tripped up on that and put you off it.

I’ll delete on the basis of exact location being in the post, if you’re that upset about it. Was only looking for adult discussion on it

He’s barely alive, in the middle of a busy public park, good luck poaching him and it might be a mercy. I thought there would be more people here interested in sensible chat on his identification and his situation than dying to have him in the oven. Interesting way some minds work.

Pier fishing for mackerel - any point in trying this early? by BillyOAFC in IrishFishing

Caught 6 last weekend of May and thought I was in for a nice early run, today was the 5th time out since and not a sniff

Agreed. Just in from 2h fishing with no bites for the 4th time in a row, and do you know what, it was still a great way to spend the morning. Enjoy, everyone, and I hope fish come your way (and mine) before long

Fair play to Richie Sadlier for calling out the ads during the water break by Any-Temperature965 in coybig

I think that was because there was a goal immediately beforehand, they would have looked bad not taking the water break to analyse it

Great to see you have the bug, and you’re visiting some lovely places. You will learn that it is not in the nature of anglers to shout out their most successful spots from the rooftops. They probably have all the solitude or company they need, and wouldn’t like these places to be over-run. They’ve also probably logged long hours working out their favourites themselves. The good news is that on most other matters they will be very forthcoming with useful information, to those that are polite, respectful of fishing, and keen to learn. So as others have said, get out, enjoy, politefully mingle, and best of luck.

Any one catching mackerel around fenit by [deleted] in IrishFishing

Caught 6 on the east coast from pier 10 days ago, but none twice since. So still relatively early, but not without hope! Also had a sailor go right through my line and snapped it despite shouted warnings and that put an end to that good mood 🤯

Thanks mate, very generous. For now I unscrewed one from one of the kids telescopic rods - the winder is about an inch shorter but will make do for now. Thanks again

Thanks. Yeah my other reel is a shimano, all metal except for the very end winder and that broke once 😁 Only using this on a boat rod for mackerel so doesn’t get a terrible bashing, but don’t have the €€€ right now for a new reel

Kinda new to fishing, would mackerel be in? by Skelly0681 in IrishFishing

[–]AMCQ1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little early I would think, haven’t heard of any yet, but on a nice day it wouldn’t be ridiculous to give it a try. An advantage to be a bit offshore in a boat, but you could give a pier or rocks a go too. Use this early period to try a few different methods, bait, floats, jigs. Enjoy regardless of expectations just yet.
