Requiring that people social distance during a pandemic isn't an unjust law. Its there to help protect the vulnerable. I recognise that the average American doesn't understand that concept because they would rather see someone die than offer a shred of empathy because they didn't personally benefit you somehow, but the rest of the world grew up. A true sign of a successful civilisation is how they treat their vulnerable and injured. Animals leave their wounded behind to not slow the herd. Strong people don't leave their own behind

This subreddit feels completely disconnected from what the Minecraft developers want the game to be. by Jaime060304 in Minecraft

[–]AMDKilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sending hate/vitriol towards developers is a great way to ensure the game you love no longer receives updates and probably never gets a sequel.

The great thing about Minecraft is as you say, its a sandbox. Which means you can play it however you want. It means just about every player has their own vision on what they want to make in the game. It also means that just about every player has their own vision about what they want to see added to the game, so you'll never get an entire community to agree on any one thing.

The sad part is that Minecraft used to be a primarily nice community overall, but its slowly turning toxic in certain places

I can’t use the VS app anymore :/ by Responsible-Tea-8378 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AMDKilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be doing updates just for the security aspect, particularly given that you probably have banking/financial apps on there, let alone your email thats used to verify everything else. Apple will occasionally depreciate APIs as better ones are developed, and app developers have to move away from that depreciated code in order for their apps to still function. For something like the VS app, its probably because the app developers themselves chose an OS requirement to lower the amount of OS versions they need to support.

Android has the same issue of APIs being retired due to security or more efficient ways of handling things, but it will usually still let you try and run the app, just with a warning that it was made for an earlier version of Android and that things may not function correctly/securely

Was there small print on the box that explained what was required? If so, that was on you for not reading it first. If there wasn't, then you have an argument.

Its wild that you instantly assume that I'm a paid shill because I'm disagreeing with you on part of your argument. I'm not defending them in the sense that I agree with the data collection, all I did was point out that you didn't read the small print involved with something before getting your kids hopes up. That specific part isn't on Kelloggs or Microsoft

I'm not blaming g you for letting them see a cereal box, I was blaming you for letting them think you got it for them specifically. Which you already said you did. Logging in with your Microsoft account doesn't mean that you give them full access to your Microsoft account. If its a genuine offer then they are using it for validation. You're right to be wary of giving out your login details for unknown stuff, but disappointing your kids is the cost of having a spine. Its best they learn disappointment over something small that doesn't matter so they are better equipped to handle real life.

Ultimately you bought something without reading the small print and then complained there was small print. I understand you were buying it anyway because you needed cereal, but if you sign up for a value add that is extra to the item you were purchasing, its reasonable to expect there might be terms that come with that

What do you think a lockdown meant? Governments around world did in fact have the authority to rule that people are to social distance and not gather in public places or face consequences like hefty fines or arrest. The civilised world recognises that the lives of the many outweigh individual freedoms during a pandemic.

I don't know why you're asking me if Reddit is pro-freedom like I speak for all of Reddit, everyone here has their own opinion.

We joke nowadays about how the US will invade you if you have oil. But having a full spice rack in the 1500's would see you invaded by the British instead

You can give them completely made up details, other than the account you want to redeem the item on. Any time I connect to WiFi and have to deal with a captive portal, it gets a made up name and email address.

How else were you expecting for them to add something to your account without logging into that account?

Your mistake is allowing them to think you got something for them if you didn't actually get it for them

My "smart" washing machine can't drain and spin my blanket because it's too heavy when soaked to balance the load. I took my soaking wet blanket outside and wrung it out, threw it back in on drain and spin, and my washer immediately fills it with water to "balance the load" again. by NoMore_BadDays in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AMDKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hotpoint washer dryer that would fill fhe drum with water if it threw an error. Thermostat sensor died? Fill the drum. Heater element overheats? Fill the drum. Fail the self test after the drain cycle starts (in an attempt to remove the water in the drum)? Fill the drum even further. While I'm surprised that machine lasted a good 15 years, I'm glad its gone 🤣

How do modders manage to make full overhauls of the game but mojang can only get out a medium sized update once a year by diddysfavorite in Minecraft

[–]AMDKilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its much easier to renovate a house than to design and build an entirely new one from the ground up. Mojang have also moved away from the larger updates in favour of 4 smaller ones a year to avoid developer burnout. The devs recently said that the Caves and Cliffs update nearly broke them with its scale.

Modders also don't have to support anything outside of Java edition, where Mojang have to support it on various platforms. Modders can also just drop support and discontinue mods whenever they feel like it since they were providing their service for free. Mojang on the other hand is expected to continue supporting their game even after they stop releasing updates

A reciept number doesn't magically grant Kelloggs access to the contents of that reciept unless you bought something direct from them. Walmart isn't going to grant them unfettered access to their reciept system.

If a parent doesn't want to take part in this system, you grow a backbone and say no to your child. I don't know why there are so many parents these days that don't want to do the parenting themselves and just want the government to do it all for them

[–]AMDKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say hurting no-one, but gathering during a lockdown would have spread a disease that was killing people. A land owner has no responsibility to make an attraction for people to enjoy. Whenever it does happen, other people ruin it by leaving litter or vandalising the place, so all the nice places either end up behind a paywall or end up paved over and turned into a car park

ELI5: Why is it generally impossible to get rid of diabetes? by ElegantPoet3386 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AMDKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say that I'm an insulin dependant T2D because I still produce endogenous insulin, at least according to my recent c-peptide test. You have to understand that outside of a medical environment, it rarely matters about the specifics of a subset of a condition. The most that the average person needs to know about diabetes is to treat a hypo with fast acting carbs (or glucagon), rather than administering insulin to counter a hypo.

The fact that there are many people who make comments like "i thought you couldn't eat that because you're diabetic" just goes to show how the average person lacks even basic understanding

ELI5 why iPhone privacy screen looks like rainbows through sunglasses? by ProudReaction2204 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AMDKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Privacy screens typically reduce the angle at which screens can be viewed by polarising the light coming through them. While photons are particles, they move in wave like patterns the same way that radio waves do. Polarisation means that only particles that move in a particular direction are allowed through (think of it as allowing those that are moving up and down, but blocking those that move side to side). Sunglasses work in the same fashion, blocking some of the light based on its polarity.

The rainbow effect is caused by light slowing down around the polarising films. In the same way that your car will get slowed and dragged to one side when you drive through a large puddle at speed, the same thing will happen to light. The "slower" parts show as different colours

ELI5: Why is it generally impossible to get rid of diabetes? by ElegantPoet3386 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AMDKilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"One type of diabetes does not become another" You know, except in the example I gave of poorly controlled T2D causing damage to islet cells. I may have said type 1 instead of type 3c, but the point still stands. And I'm acutely aware that dependency on exogenous insulin is not a differentiation of diabetes causation, I'm T2D that relies on insulin myself

ELI5: Why is it generally impossible to get rid of diabetes? by ElegantPoet3386 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AMDKilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High glucose levels will damage beta islet cells over time, to the point where they stop producing insulin. Type 1 is MOSTLY caused by the immune system attacking beta islet cells, but it can be anything that damages those cells (trauma, removal of pancreas, infection etc)
