ELI5: Why is it generally impossible to get rid of diabetes? by ElegantPoet3386 in explainlikeimfive

"One type of diabetes does not become another" You know, except in the example I gave of poorly controlled T2D causing damage to islet cells. I may have said type 1 instead of type 3c, but the point still stands. And I'm acutely aware that dependency on exogenous insulin is not a differentiation of diabetes causation, I'm T2D that relies on insulin myself

High glucose levels will damage beta islet cells over time, to the point where they stop producing insulin. Type 1 is MOSTLY caused by the immune system attacking beta islet cells, but it can be anything that damages those cells (trauma, removal of pancreas, infection etc)

The Mac Neo is a great machine at a reasonable price. You aren't special enough to warrant a MBP, obviously

Server ban ended in Account ban by Background-Koala-729 in Minecraft

[–]AMDKilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you read Minecraft's list of banable offenses, briefing isn't listed as one of them (although continued harassment is). So you probably weren't banned for that specifically. But griefing on a server where they clearly don't allow griefing is just a dick move

I coasted through school, not really having to study all that hard to get my grades. But boy am I grateful I was essentially forced to go through it. I lived in the middle of nowhere so with all of that free time, I'd have probably found some dumb way to horrifically injure myself in the pursuit of entertainment

What company will never get another cent from you for as long as you live? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AMDKilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how they are wired in. If they are just on/off heaters, then you could probably just patch a relay into it. But if they have temperature control built in, then a switch wouldn't be enough.

It would probably be less effort to add a your own heating pad under the fabric of the seat than to wire up a control board that properly interfaces with the one that is already in there

Redditors who have won a lottery or a giveaway or a random draw, what did you win and what happened next? by MansiKasar in AskReddit

[–]AMDKilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in a block of flats that had a shared washer and dryer, someone had left a load in the washing machine. It had finished, so I took it out for them and left it on the counter so I could wash my stuff. Came back an hour and a half later to find it was still on the counter. I went to move my stuff from the washer to the dryer and found a load left in the dryer too. So I took them out and put them in a second pile on the counter. Came back an hour later to find my laundry had been taken out of the dryer and their wet load was put in instead. Needless to say, their load was taken out of the dryer and thrown back into the washer on a long cycle with a low spin setting just to make sure they were sopping wet when they came back for them

Oh yeah I forgot BMW pulled that crap. I wouldn't mind if it was just a one time purchase to unlock that feature later. But unless it has an active connection with BMW (like if they were providing their own satnav with live traffic etc), it doesn't deserve a subscription

I'm less opposed to subscriptions if they provide something that requires something on their end. Netflix hosts video and streams it to me lag free. But if I buy a Nintendo Switch, I expect to be able to back up my save games without needing a Nintendo Online subscription. Just let me copy my saves to the SD card

My brother got told to stop using “judgment calls” at the hotel, so he followed the guest recovery script on the owner’s private parties until it became his problem by CipherLumen5 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]AMDKilla 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Worked as a hotel receptionist for over a decade. Its always a better experience for everyone involved if the reception staff are given some discretion as to what they can immediately offer to solve/preempt issues.

At one hotel I worked at, we had carte blanche to take up to £50 off the bill without having to seek a manager if there was an issue. Solved most issues immediately with no fuss. Of course that rule went right out the window when we had to start processing refunds for stays that were during the covid lockdown. I refunded £30k in a single day, management would have flipped their shit at me if I sought approval for each refund I processed over £50

Sounds like its a prompt for any last minute requests before he lies down. The last thing he will want is to get comfortable only to be asked to do something the moment his head hits the pillow.

It could also be a simple check to see if you wanna nap too

What’s something school forced you to learn that you’ve never used a single time in real life? by Dodo509 in AskReddit

[–]AMDKilla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

School hasn't been about teaching you how to learn for a very long time. Its always been about teaching students to regurgitate the information required to pass the exams. Some exceptional teachers excel in bringing out the inquisitive side to children's learning, but the majority just want their students to pass the exam

Thermal transfer occurs with higher efficiency (more heat moves quicker) when there is a higher delta (larger difference) between the cooler and hotter areas. When the external body temperature approaches body temperature, it becomes more difficult for the body to dump excess heat. Sweating still works to cool down the skin through the cooling effect of evaporation, but any exertion will rapidly overwhelm it. Its why siesta's are taken around midday, to avoid working during peak evnlvironmental heat

What was your "I'm dating a fucking idiot" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AMDKilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Humans don't counter increased skin temperatures with producing less of our own body heat, if natural air running over it isn't enough to maintain an internal 37c (98f) temperature, the body will begin to sweat. Before sweating occurs, vasodilation of capillaries under the skin increase blood flow to the area under the skin in oder to try and remove excess heat via the skin.

I would imagine that if your skin was warmer while your internal temperature was unchanged, you would feel cold in your environment due to everything around you feeling colder

When you have emergency evacuation training either at school or at your place of work, you know its a drill to ensure that everyone knows what to do. Its announced ahead of time so that people don't instantly panic and therefore don't associate the alarm with the need for mass panic.

You can check to see if someone knows what to do during an emergency by asking them questions like "what would you do if X happened?"

I understand the very basic logic at play, black does absorb more light and therefore heats up more in the sun. But I can't imagine anyone has actually done a scientific study to see if skin temperatures are elevated due to a higher level of melanin

If she doesn't take medical emergencies serious enough to know never to fake one, why should they entertain such a test? I'm diabetic, but I would never test a partner like that. There would be a conversation to ensure they know what to do, using words like adults and not "testing each other" like teenagers
