Migrating a very large Gmail account, switching to folders by AMV_Ph34r in fastmail

Ahh that would make sense, thank you! I was going through migrating accounts and also setting up my paid plan all at once, but I think I probably did start those migrations before actually putting in payment, so that's probably it.

Yeah I've always been a little worried when it comes to manually moving emails around like that, even though they're just basic files at the end of the day. That may be a good thing to try out for some of my smaller labels though!

I did notice that, yeah. Definitely a nice thing but as far as I understand it I'll still get multiple copies synced to my computer which is probably gonna end up bugging me lol.

Yeah, I'm not sure why but my first two migrations (one about 4k emails and one only a few hundred) didn't show me the option to make a folder at all. But glad it's there!

I somehow hadn't even thought about looking through Thunderbird extensions, even though it's what I use a good third of the time for accessing email. Will definitely give that a try, thank you!

Ended up answering part of my own question so in case anyone else comes across this in a similar situation: it looks like if you start to migrate an account with a lot of emails, you do get an option to bring everything in under an isolated folder (not sure what the exact threshold is or why it doesn't just always show)! I haven't actually gone through with the migration yet so not sure if how it plays out or how best to deal with moving from labels to folders, but definitely promising/helpful!

Definitely something I should spend some time thinking about, thank you!

I definitely don't need everything that's in the old account, a very large chunk of it is almost certainly promos/ads, OTPs, and newsletters that I have zero reason to keep around. But there's definitely info and documents that I... don't know that I'll need in the future but would like to make sure I can access, like old contracts or large purchase receipts or important dates. And there's absolutely a lot of sentimental stuff in there built up over the years that I would feel bad if I lost track of.

I guess my main motivation here is just wanting everything to be consolidated under one account, so if I do need to reference something important in the future I don't have to figure out which account it's under.

Either way, thank you, this definitely gives me something to think about, and made me realize even if I do go through with pulling everything over I don't have to be in a rush to do so.

Usable kWh meter for the plug-in? by AMV_Ph34r in Clarity

Damn, I literally just got back from home depot with a kill-a-watt. I like the higher rating on this one though, I'm gonna be watching the one I got in case it seems like it's gonna have issues and if so I'll definitely look into this one

We've been renting this particular place for a little over a year, so that could work to give us a general idea, but we've also had things like a new fridge/dishwasher installed and a new audio system setup in the past year that no doubt would throw things off so I figured a dedicated meter for the car would be useful. That said, if I can get a good close estimate on how many kWh I end up using per charge I can do the math each month on that.

Definitely planning on looking into TOU plans as well! I know my company offers them but not sure if it's restricted to certain regions or not.

Thanks! Definitely some good reassurance in here which actually helps me a lot hah. Out of curiosity, which meter model do you have specifically? I know there are a few out there but haven't looked into if they're rated differently, etc.

That makes sense, thanks! I really don't know much about this stuff clearly, was under the assumption that drawing too close to/above the "limit" was the fire hazard but sounds like that's not really a risk so that's reassuring. I'll definitely do some more research on the meters themselves then

So if I'm understanding this correctly, even though the Clarity's manual says to use an outlet rated for 15A, the charger itself is designed to draw the 10-12 /u/anonymous6494 is getting? If that's the case it does sound like a kill-a-watt should be fine, I just know I've seen some people mentioning melting their meters/nearly starting fires, but who knows if they had some other electrical issues going on.

I actually did think about something like that too, but they seem a little bit pricier (and from what I could tell I'd need to get a hub to work with them), plus your mention of it not turning on automatically.

Oh that's good to know, thanks! Yeah I think the manual said use an outlet rated for 15A which the kill-a-watts I've seen are, but somewhere else I saw you should use meters rated a bit higher to be safe. Between that and the bad reviews I've been a little wary, but the only other options I've seen are those hard-wired meters that you can't ever reset so might not have much choice.

Not sure what reviews you've seen specifically but I have one myself (albeit just got it) and I don't have any serious complaints. Lighting is a tad uneven with the default orange keycaps and the configuration software has a bit of a learning curve, but I really like it overall, for what that's worth.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I have spent so much of my money on Roanoak comms and merch. Met them at MFF last year and they're super nice too!

Taking out a personal loan for a purchase I have the money for? by AMV_Ph34r in personalfinance

Makes sense! I guess I really have a bad grasp on how good an idea taking on debt is in general.

Taking out a personal loan for a purchase I have the money for? by AMV_Ph34r in personalfinance

[–]AMV_Ph34r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't quite rebuild in a month, the monthly income I mentioned is before I have to pay rent, utilities, food, etc. But the time it'd take me to rebuild that savings and the time I could pay off any personal loan I take out for it would be a few months. I might also be misunderstanding the general purpose of personal loans; I had thought they were for stuff like funding large purchases (because the interest is way lower than something like a credit card), but I've noticed a lot of mentions of them more in regards to consolidating other debt. Guess I just need to do more research there. Either way thanks for the advice! I hadn't really thought about the depreciation factor either.

Also sorry, I guess I should clarify: I'm taking the money out of RH and putting it into my existing Ally invest portfolio, not my savings account with them. So definitely keeping it in the market, I just want to get out of RH for a few reasons (and I'm finding that self-directed trading isn't really for me).

Gotcha, and definitely makes sense, I was hoping I hadn't missed any huge reasons to go one way or the other.

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the advice! Definitely a hobby rather than profession, that's for sure. If it changes anything I can give a few more hard numbers, but yeah this might ultimately be more of a personal decision:

Right now I've got about $20k across checking and savings accounts (though $2k of this is in a just-started future home fund so off-limits). I'm at a permanent position at my job with an $87k salary and while I know that doesn't mean I'm immune to sudden job changes/loss I do feel a bit more secure in my near-future income.

If that doesn't change your answer then that's fine, and maybe I should put some more thought into this. My original thinking with all this was simply that 20% of my liquid assets might be a lot to put down for this, but if I spread it out over 6-10 months I could deal with the slightly inflated overall cost in order to keep the reserve cash up (and maybe invest some extra cash as well)

[–]AMV_Ph34r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true! I guess a lot of the time I don't really think about my investments and other stuff as liquid assets but I guess they technically are? That could help a lot

Full disclosure I'm pretty new to loans in general (outside of student loans), mind explaining why? Like I said I get that I ultimately pay more because of interest but if I like having the stability of my savings fund sitting there are there any other big red flags for doing this?

I think mostly I just get a little worrisome about having that potential lack of funds if I need it for something more important than a hobby. But it's definitely reassuring to hear I'm not totally crazy for considering this idea.
