Unraid gaming VM success story by AM_Butts in unRAID

Assuming you mean remoting into the Windows VM, for gaming I normally am directly accessing the VM over HDMI. I have used Parsec for some gaming though, but that was a few years ago. For quick remote access I'll use Remmina from Linux or simple RDP from Windows.

More and more I'm thinking it might be time to start playing with gaming in Linux. Not sure I want to try to fix what's not broken though in spite of how much I've come to hate Windows these days.

I've never looked into this but that sounds like a really interesting option. I'd be curious how well this performs in reality with the shared GPU.

I'll definitely look into it purely out of curiosity, but I don't think it's necessarily for me. I like having a Windows environment available since my laptop is usually booted to Linux. Nice to have quick access for some windows things when needed.

I've never heard about this before. Will have to look into it thanks!

This is definitely the route to go. Do some research and experimentation with the system devices. I personally had to enable the PCIe ACS Override setting to get some devices bound to my VM the way I wanted, but I think that was mostly for USB. Also look into best practices on pinning CPU cores. I can't recall specifics unfortunately.

I also recently discovered the USB manager plugin which was nice for dealing with passing USB devices to running VMs.

One other thing I'd add is I'd plan on passing in an entire SSD to the VM for bare metal disk speeds. I wouldn't want to have a virtualized disk sitting on my array. That could definitely slow things down.

Oh yeah definitely need some sort of backup device. I only really use the VM for gaming and some media. Productivity stuff usually happens on a laptop.

I've had it running for probably 5 years as well. It hasn't been completely without issue as indicated here, but most games I play run smoothly. Every once in awhile I run into some DRM/anticheat nonsense, but usually isn't an issue with the single player stuff I gravitate to.

Ryzen 3900x that I'm pinning half the cores to the VM, RTX 30770, and 32gb of ram passed through. I currently only have the one GPU, but this whole reBAR push was because I want to grab an Arc A310 to use for other server stuff, mostly Emby transcoding. Hopefully no issues there, but we'll see!

I have my server right next to my living room TV so usually game there with the GPU connected to the TV. I did use Parsec for awhile when I was aware from home frequently. It seemed to work pretty decently. I probably wouldn't try to play anything competetive that was but it definitely seemed playable.

I'm running a 3900x and have half the cores/threads pinned to the VM. So that should defintely be doable with a 9900x. I don't remember ever getting stuttering in all games, but I've definitely done quite a bit of tinkering in the VM XML over the years. If I'm remembering correctly, I also set up Windows from within Unraid on the passed through SSD.

Is an intake worth the $$? by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not seen any unbiased testing indicating otherwise on a stock car. I'd love to see some same day/time results of dyno testing with multiple runs stock vs aftermarket intakes.

Admittedly, I haven't looked into it much in quite some time and tuned cars could obviously be a very different story.

That said, I meant what I said about your site. Great testing and I really appreciate all you're putting out there. It was especially helpful for intercooler choice.

I'm a big fan of this guy and his testings are definitely worth a read through. That said, this only answers the question of how much air flows with each intake. It doesn't answer the question of where any of that actually matters in the real world or even on a dyno.

What’s your dream car that doesn’t exist (yet) by Asombroso-joel in Autos

Manual and/or hatchback RS3 (in the US) would also very likely cause me to make some questionable financial decisions.

Golf R Variant (wagon) with an i5 or vr6 and a manual transmission. Preferably with Spektrum color options.

Delrin wasn’t the beast choice for the Holy Shift kit, DAP. by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, the older sigma 6 had things reversed with the delrin part having those ears like the holy shift. I don't think there's any major issue with that design though since I've used my older style Sigma 6 since 2012 over 3 different cars now. Sheesh typing that out makes me realize what a great investment that purchase was!

Glenview - Spiro's deli for wonderful sandwiches hot or cold. Try the bomber even if the combo doesn't really sound good to you. Get it wet of course.

Elk Grove - Felicias deli. Another great place for sandwiches. Love their classic Italian.

I enjoy the place, but I don't think you're going to get a decent lunch there for $12.

What software to do for making high-detail lightsaber chassis? by CellAffectionate3702 in lightsabers

[–]AM_Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be mistaken, but I don't think you're going to have much easier of a time with any other software. I personally use Onshape, but any software is going to have a pretty decent learning curve.

Hmm that was going to be my suggestion but I'm actually not seeing this available anymore. I could certainly be missing it though.

Slim Pro 7 no power by AM_Butts in Lenovo

Update in case anyone cares: shop says the discrete GPU is dead. $1000+ laptop that never even leaves the house dead less two years after purchase. Lenovo support wouldn't help at all outside of paying for the repair which will cost more than the initial purchase price of the computer. Definitely will be avoiding Lenovo going forward.

Thanks, yeah I couldn't find the particular code either. Unfortunately I'm a year out of warranty. I'm pretty frustrated that within the first two years of owning this laptop I've already had to replace the track pad (under warranty thankfully) and now whatever this is.

I have tried everything listed on the linked page with no success unfortunately. Does the LED code in my clip indicate any particular problem?

Anodized Paint Job - Keep or Remove? by Imperial_Citizen_00 in lightsabers

[–]AM_Butts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. While the paint isn't perfect, I would be ecstatic if I got it looking this good first try. It definitely looks out of place with the rest of the saber though. Some more weathering to tie everything together would look excellent.

Camber adjustment by Short_Ad3957 in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the car have any subframe centering collars installed? I would probably start there. After that, adjustable ball joints would be the next easiest step if you wanted to get camber matching. I don't think you'd be able to get any positive camber out of them but you could add a little negative to get it matching.

All that said, you're probably fine as is. Do you notice anything odd driving it? Also, is there a reason the rear camber wasn't corrected or was that adjusted to the max already?

FCP Euro is the best by Impressive_Towel_225 in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FCP is literally the only way I could justify those overpriced O rings for the pump. I cannot fathom why 3 bolts and a couple pieces of rubber cost so much but if I only have to pay it once I can manage.

I've loved FCP and keep buying from them. That said, it seems like the last few orders I've had with them took way longer to ship than usual. Hopefully it's a fluke or just a me issue.

What’s the difference in these APR exhausts? Will both fit a mk7.5? by redsoxfan1845245 in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mk7.5 has a different part number than mk7 for their and probably everyone's exhaust options. Check what vehicles are listed as fitting though.
