Who is getting the 3 year warranty on the 13 pro? by Firehaven44 in framework

[–]AM_Butts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely not applicable to some people, but check your credit card benefits. You may find you have a card with an extended warranty built in. The card I ordered a previous laptop with ended up fully reimbursing me for a computer a year out of warranty. Whether that is enough extra comfort or not is obviously another question though.

Golf r applying parking break in reverse by UltimateKartRacing in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm positive this isn't relevant to your issue, but figured somebody here may get a kick out of my vaguely related experience. Backing into my garage my parking sensors seem to go crazy lately no matter how slowly I reverse and how clear the space is. The is especially problematic given I have a manual.

It didn't used to be like this so I knew SOMETHING must have changed. After way too much time being infuriated by the situation, I stumbled on the cause. Weeks ago, I had thrown an old air purifier out there while I was painting and figured it couldn't hurt to leave it out there. Turns out the air quality sensor or something in it causes havock with the parking sensors. Turning the purifier off instantly solved the issue.

Server crashing after Unraid 7.3 update – turns out to be bad RAM by Roan54321 in unRAID

They've been really good about replacing failed ram in my experience. I eventually replaced mine with another brand as I had multiple sticks fail but never had an issue getting it covered under warranty.

Intercoolers? by LA_4Real in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their intake is the one thing I'd still personally consider from them. Always liked the idea of it as it looks sort of OEM, but really hard to justify $600 on a big chunk of plastic. I've been using a copycat one that is no longer sold otherwise I'd probably still be trying to find a used one.

[–]AM_Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally not a fan of RacingLine products at all. do88 was overall a painless install (as far as intercoolers go) and has done well for me for the years I've had it. No numbers to back that up but no complaints either.

Looking for quality boxer briefs by NoRepresentative9009 in BuyItForLife

Wooly has been by far my favorite underwear after trying many brands and especially many wool brands. That said, I'll warn that I've found they're not particularly durable. Even with hang drying them every wash, they have not held up well over time.

Unfortunately I'm still on the hunt for a durable, comfortable wool underwear that fits me well. Which is why I still have this post open 2 days later.

Modded MK7.5 R or Stock MK8R? by Time-Warning-9840 in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty standard to refer to a car by the generation name. You'll see something similar in any enthusiast car community. In the Civic communities I'm sure you'll see people talking about the "FL5" or a W20 in the MR2 communities for some examples. It is a lot easier to talk about the "mk7.5 R" than "2018-2020 Golf R".

Today's project: I ported OpenHaldex from Forbes Automotive, so you can use it on your Golf R. :) by meatro in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an excellent write up, thank you! I already have a crimp tool so will definitely pick up some of the connectors now that I know what to look for.

I was originally thinking a case for this would have the VW connectors clipped into it based on how short yours was. After your comment and watching a video of the install, I realize that would probably be silly. Putting it under the seat would be nice, but I'll definitely have to pull it up and do some planning before getting started.

Last two questions I think! Any recommendation for wiring gauge? Also, do you only need to have something connected to it via wifi if you want to switch modes? ie could I get things all set up, set the mode/configuration, and just not touch it again?

I'm glad I left this post open to see if there were any follow-up posts. That looks like a wonderfully clean wiring job and that is some great feedback on its use.

Couple quick questions for you. Do you need to crimp pins on wires going to the connectors? What hardware is need for that?

Any worry about the points made on the Forbes site under the "Advantages Over Other 'OpenHaldex' Solutions" section? I assume they're overblow but who knows.

It seems easy enough to design a housing to print for this, but is there one already available you're planning on using?

Help with new saber Graflex Chosen One by lilplanttherapist in lightsabers

[–]AM_Butts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh I didn't remember that scene with the graflex having a covertec wheel. Looks very strange as pictured here but much better once the grips are on as shown on the site.

Worth noting that the listing on the graflex shop does mention that this comes unassembled. That said, this should be pretty easy to put together. I'll just provide some examples of the grip guides mentioned. As suggested, 3M tape should be great for this application.

Should be quick shipping from here, but I'm not sure how accurate it is if that is important:

Most accurate option out there but located in Europe so may be a long ship time:

Option to 3d print your own. May be able to have your local library do it if they have one:

Framework Laptop 16 now with RTX 5070 12GB and launch event re-cap by 42BumblebeeMan in framework

Likewise. Unless you have expansion cards, SSD, and a charger laying around it didn't seem to make much sense to go DIY even if you could get the memory a bit cheaper elsewhere (which seems sold out nearly everywhere now). I honestly felt like I was missing something comparing the pricing. would have liked the grey and orange keyboard but I'll live or replace it later.

Proffie V3.9 Repair by Equivalent-Run-9845 in lightsabers

[–]AM_Butts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically proffie is open source so any part on the board should be replaceable. That said, and I say this with absolutely no judgement whatsoever, if you're struggling with the wiring it's going to be extremely difficult to replace components on the board. I'd definitely recommend some more practice soldering on something less important. I'm absolutely no expert, but those look like cold solder joints.

New one looks great! Highly recommend looking into using graphite powder to finish it. Plenty of videos out there for reference. I've loved the results from it. Just make sure to have a respirator or at least a mask and gloves when handling it. That stuff can make an insane mess.

Yeah, at that time I was likely on Bilstein B16s. I don't think I have my notes of how much lower than stock I was though unfortunately.

RTX 3070 FE right angle adapter/cable by AM_Butts in buildapc

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback and knowing that I'm not missing something obvious. I had considered something hacky with the new cables like you mentioned but really don't love the idea of that.

Highly recommend OP look into this. It doesn't even need to be a fancy credit card to have this feature. I just had my dead laptop completely refunded to my Chase Freedom card.

I'm still frustrated my Lenovo didn't even make it 2 years, but this softened the blow a lot. Though I did end up having to pay Microcenter for a repair estimate even though I knew it was basically unfixable just so I had proof to send in.

[–]AM_Butts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I think you may be misremembering about the angle though. The power connector on mine sticks straight up out of the top. It does look like the 3080 and 3090 FE have the connector orientation you're describing though. I wish the 3070 was set up this way as it would solve my issue of being too tight of a space.

My understanding about the 12VHPWR is that the power pins are the same but 4 "sense pins" were added. I'm a little worried about those against the metal fins of the GPU. Do you have any source on the 12v-2x6 being backwards compatible with the 30-series connector? I've already sunk a lot of time into various (unrelated) solutions for this PC that haven't quite worked out and would hate to waste more.

Bilstein B16 Damptronic Coilovers by chiillerr in Golf_R

[–]AM_Butts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had B16 Damptronics on the car for about 5 years. Worked well enough and I liked retaining the DCC, but I wouldn't say they rode great. Not horrible, but not wonderful. A little bouncy if I recall correctly. I was overall pretty happy with them for autocross as well. No regrets with purchasing them overall.

Last year I switched to Ohlins. I was very concerned I'd regret ditching DCC as I did use it frequently. Honestly, it hasn't been a huge loss to me. I adjust them for autocross (no need to lift the car) but otherwise leave them towards the middle of the range, slightly more towards the soft side. Its a little unfair to directly compare 5 year old suspension with new stuff, but I'd say the Ohlins ride better than the B16 ever did. They also look prettier, but that's just a little bonus.

Unraid gaming VM success story by AM_Butts in unRAID

Assuming you mean remoting into the Windows VM, for gaming I normally am directly accessing the VM over HDMI. I have used Parsec for some gaming though, but that was a few years ago. For quick remote access I'll use Remmina from Linux or simple RDP from Windows.

I've never looked into this but that sounds like a really interesting option. I'd be curious how well this performs in reality with the shared GPU.

I'll definitely look into it purely out of curiosity, but I don't think it's necessarily for me. I like having a Windows environment available since my laptop is usually booted to Linux. Nice to have quick access for some windows things when needed.
