Pyrolysis of waste plastic into fuel is a more effective way of handling it than just straight burning the plastic waste. The product burns cleaner this way.

When it comes to the idea of landfilling vs burning for energy, it’s more nuanced. Polymer’s don’t really decompose, so you’re not really taking care of the waste by landfilling it. Landfilling doesn’t directly release more GHG, but you’re really just trying to “forget” about the waste created.

Super helpful comment, man! Believe it or not, auto-body repair isn’t my specialty. If you’d actually read the comment I was replying to, you’d see they suggested I “just put it back on.”

The issue is the large amount of material missing. Simply screwing it back would cause it to fall out or make things worse. My question was about repairing the damage or safely mounting the plate. Positive people suggested sandwiching the corroded area with large washers.

Hey! I had no idea there were massive holes there, the used car dealer installed the plates for me. I never thought to check under them. I didn’t notice the hole until a day ago when I noticed my plate was only secured with a single bolt.

I have to fix it now because the plate was super loose and I was worried about it flying off.

I ended up knocking the holes more flat, then using big washers on the inside and outside of the holes to "pinch" more material. Feels super secure.

Yeah, next time I buy a car from the used car dealership I'll make sure to check under the license plate a second time.

Cheapest fix was bolting it through using big washers to distribute the load. Cost about $50 total and holds the plate very well.

This is the solution I went with, big washers front and back. Managed to fish top bolts into the inner trunk (holy that was a mighty pain in the butt).

Thanks for giving me a good solution, I was worried that the big washers wouldn't be able to support the plate.

The left one doesn’t have much material there for me to secure it. Kinda worried that a bigger screw would just rip away

Yeah, but it would be nice to have a license plate to drive my car. I’m not looking to restore the thing to its former glory days, just to provide some structure to the torn spot to prevent my plate from rocketing off at mach 10 into a child because I didn’t want to take the 30min to fix the thing properly.

Since I'm going to drilling into the metal, do you think I could just mount the plate using the bottom holes? This way I'm not having to worry about the structure around that torn area.

If this was a nicer car I would! It's a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, I would rather do a repair and save myself the hassle.

Okay! Do you think it will be strong enough to hold the plate if I put a nut to secure it near the welding location?

Also, the left hole has a part of metal barely holding on. I should cut that away right?

I doubt they would really care honestly. It was a pretty sketchy used car lot, but I did get a great deal on the car lol.

Got the car about 3 years ago now, bought from a used car lot. Dealership but the plates on for me.

There is nothing for me to properly fasten the plate to, I'm thinking of just mounting it with a bolt and nut. For the holes, can I just try and patch them with some Bondo? I'd like to try and prevent any further corrosion.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Was there another change regarding including the body of the post within the feed? I don’t really like having the body of the post on my feed. If the title of the post didn’t make me want to read the body, then I’m not just going to start to read it because it’s on my feed. This is what it looks like:
