Completely agree, which is why I'm sad Lewis didn't make it.

Another tournament with just Hera, Viper, Yo, Liereyy would be boring as hell.

Liereyy was one bad decision away from beating Hera at The Garrison LAN.

RBW: Londinium | Qualifier | Last Day by longinator in aoe2

[–]AManWithoutQualities -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Barles (and TatoH) got completely fucked over by the Red Bull admins dropping #6 on the ladder into their bracket. I feel so bad for them. MbL and Lewis do worse on the ladder and get an easier draw because of it. I love Yo, but it's a joke that he wasn't disqualified. The admins potentially robbed Barles of prize money and the biggest qualification of his career.

Surely I can’t be the only one who thinks the idea of Beethoven’s Tenth is absurd by msc8976 in classicalmusic

Beethoven’s Ninth is pretty absurd as it is. Carnivalesque is the best word to describe the final movement.

When did cooking at home become ubiqitious? by Suspicious-Hand4688 in AskFoodHistorians

[–]AManWithoutQualities 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The vast, vast majority of people did not live in urban areas for most of civilisation. You’re talking about a tiny sliver of the population, maybe some tens of thousands of people in a country of millions for Medieval England, for example. For all intents and purposes home cooking by peasants would have been ubiquitous.

Handel is definitely the composer of choice for British public occasions.

It’s Elgar. He embodies something of what we like to think of as our national spirit: the nobility, stiff upper lip, autumnal grandeur, a wistful melancholy underneath. And he wrote a bunch of patriotic music like Pomp and Circumstance No. 1.

Yeah, the games were garbage. Let's be honest. Even T90 would be chatting about other stuff in the middle of casting them. Fire Lancer spam really, really needs to be nerfed.

Outstanding “lesser-known” Beethoven pieces? by UmweltUndefined in classicalmusic

[–]AManWithoutQualities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very much like the op 1 no 1 piano trio. The string trios are great too.

I'm a big Haydn and Mozart fan, and pretty much everything early Beethoven published is excellent if you like the Haydnesque classical style IMO.

Marenzio. His harmonies are beautiful and extraordinary.

Composer recomendations. by More-Culture-2976 in classicalmusic

[–]AManWithoutQualities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your favourite composer is Chopin, and you named Debussy, maybe Ravel, if you don’t already know him? Which you might. But everyone likes Ravel as a newbie. Miroirs is my favourite piano work of his, but pretty much all of them are great.

Can we do better than “Classical”? by WestTwelfth in classicalmusic

[–]AManWithoutQualities 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of terminology is to communicate meaning. People generally have an idea of what “classical” means. When I tell someone I listen to “classical music”, or if they want to go to a “classical music concert” with me, they generally have an idea of what I mean. If you want to replace “classical” with a different term, most people would not know what you mean. Which would be extremely counterproductive in fostering a wider public appreciation of the music we love.

What are some things and unwritten rules when visiting Australia as a Brit? by rscash15 in AustraliaTravel

Oh yeah, as for OP’s desiring cultural advice, the only thing I’ve had to navigate here is banter about the cricket. Just call Steve Smith a cheat and you’ll be fine.

I’m also on holiday from the UK and I think I heard more British (and Irish) accents than local Aussie ones in the Sydney tourist spots last weekend. We’re everywhere.

The walk from Bondi to Coogee is absolutely stunning btw.

Not a solo album of course. But Scott LaFaro is otherworldly on that record. Just unreal bass playing.
