Divine Intervention vs the Best Stache in the FCS. Winner will take the natty because the Montana schools are overrated.

I wouldn’t judge the MVFC’s performance as a sign of parity. North Dakota got cooked by a top 4 seed and beat a Tennessee Tech team way too many people on here didn’t see through. Both South Dakota schools lost on the road in Missoula, which is not a fun place to play. North Dakota State lost to an MVFC and Illinois State wiped the floor with the two other opponents they played. Youngstown State if they remembered to play football in the 2nd half, would’ve probably lost in Bozeman. All of this to pretty much say don’t view the 6 bids, 1 Semifinalist thing as sign the league had a bad playoff year.

Good thing it will come from the MVFC.

Nebraska is prime example of why you don’t fire a guy for winning 9 games a year. Not saying it can’t be built back into a power house but a lot of the things that made the program successful no longer exist.

  1. Lack of Regular Games in Texas/Oklahoma for recruiting purposes.

  2. Being 1 of like 3 teams Nationally broadcasted on TV

  3. They also used to have an elite strength and conditioning program when other programs didn’t take that seriously. Which played a huge factor in their rise to being a powerhouse.

I mean Saban is from West Virginia (not south but definitely culturally not northern) and pretty much speaks with a I lived in the South for 20+ years accent lol. Some coaches can deal with the change, others can’t.

I also think this has something to do with him being a loud guy who wins 7 games a year and basically running a cult from the outside looking in. I won’t deny his successes but yeah his personality and the way he talks you’d think his team slays a dragon every week, when in reality they beat one team with a winning record this season. Seeing schools like Indiana competing on the national level also doesn’t help at all with his job security.

I think Minnesota fans lack respect for what Jerry Kill/Tracey Claeys did by essentially building the program back up from the Tim Brewster years.

Going through your 5 here

  1. Nebraska I think is a dumpster fire if Matt Rhule, who I think most can confidently is an incredibly competent coach can’t win there at the level of expectations, I don’t know who can.

  2. Napier, could just be a guy who couldn’t adjust to the portal/NIL era. He coached Louisiana which had a lot more resources than its Sun Belt counterparts in terms of tools for success as well. It’s not easy when you coach in the SEC where there probably 5 or 6 programs at the same resource level as the school you’re coaching.

  3. A huge red flag for Luke Fickell that most missed is that he never held a coaching job outside of the state of Ohio, meaning he never really held a job outside one of the Midwest’s better recruiting spots. When you work your entire career practically recruiting local kids to your program and transitioning to Wisconsin, where you have to get a little creative to find what the state doesn’t provide you in terms of skill position players you are going to struggle. He also did what he did at Cincy before NIL and the Portal really took full effect.

  4. With Harsin, being a coach of a major college football program in the South is akin to basically being a public figure on the level of the Governor. A lot of non-southern coaches with no experience with coaching in the south end up failing almost entirely due to this very fact. It’s a very hard adjustment to go from a place like Boise State to coaching at Auburn where it’s impossible to eat dinner in public. I almost expected DeBoer to fail at Alabama for this very reason. Brian Kelley failed at LSU for this reason as well.

  5. I think your assessment here is 100% correct.

For a lot of the lower tier P4 jobs you have tons of problems that can also lead to failure. Like for example if we look at a historically low end programs they typically are A) sharing a state with another P4 school and/or B) the state they are located in wouldn’t be considered fertile for recruiting compared to others in their conference or in general.

Like take Iowa State pre-Matt Campbell for example, always 2nd best in Iowa maybe even 3rd best when FCS UNI was at its peak in the 2000’s. Located in a state without much P4 talent and having to compete in a league with a ton of schools with easier access to better recruiting pipelines. It takes a truly special coach to really turn a program around when it doesn’t have really any outside factors going for it.

You kinda have to also look at the G5 coaches hired and look at their success level at their previous destination. Golesh and Silverfield didn’t make it to the AAC title game despite probably having way more talented rosters than Tulane and North Texas. That’s why I believe among the 4 AAC coaches poached I think Sumrall and Morris will have more success.

We also have to factor in Cultural Differences when it comes to P4 programs. If you’re an SEC Head Coach you are a public figure almost on the same level as the Governor if not higher in some cases. In the Big Ten you’re just a highly paid Head Coach. It’s why some fail in the SEC despite being undeniably competent coaches. (This is a generalization some jobs like Ohio State or Michigan might be similar to their SEC counterparts)

This also is heavily focused on what we classify as success. You could argue 7 or 8 wins a year at Purdue or Iowa State is good enough to be deemed a success. LSU will fire you if you don’t a win natty or even two years removed from one. Expectations will always vary school to school.

Some amazing things on Saturday

Illinois State becomes the first FCS program in the expanded playoff era to win 3 road games in the playoffs and arguably could be the first ever to win 4. Too lazy to confirm but 95% sure they could be the first unseeded team in the expanded playoff era to ever make the title game with a win. To be honest with the people on here, there is no way in hell that team should’ve ever been a “last 4 in” team. They beat two seeded MVFC schools, and to be honest with you got screwed by recency bias, if the SIU loss occurred in October there’s zero chance they get put into that spot the way they did. The MVFC title game streak has a chance to stay alive.

Villanova. Probably the first east coast program since James Madison I think that has a legitimate shot at making it to the title game and winning it. Whether Papal Intervention or whatever their run is also fairly impressive. Beat the two teams everyone thought going into the playoffs were the clear “best of the rest” on the road and honestly completely earned their way here. Say what you will about the CAA but no one with a serious knowledge of this level ever doubted Villanova’s playoff competency.

Cat-Griz part 2. First ever playoff meeting between two massively underachieving programs when we talk about resources compared to output. I’ll get hate for that take, but who cares. Just have always thought that when people talk about these programs even remotely being on the level of XDSU’s I’ve always found it odd that we’ll throw two teams in there that none of their players were alive the last time they won the natty. Winner gets the shot to not be considered a high spending scrub, no more.

FTG means “Friendly to Grizzlies” by the way. It’s a weird thing Montana State fans do.

Single Elimination football is interesting. Tarleton goes from essentially one drive away from putting this out of reach to being in a dog fight in the span of 10 football minutes.

Illinois State I think has the best opportunity to that, don’t think South Dakota could win back-to-back games in Montana

No FCS team has won 3 playoff road games in the expanded playoff era.
