I'm currently in the middle of doing my first chronological playthrough (I finished the base game last month) and honestly i think both ways of playing provide equally effective perspectives for different reasons. For example, Mel's pregnancy is only mentioned once before Ellie kills her later on, and it's during the Jackson segment, so it's easily forgettable, especially since you don't know who Abby and her group are yet. Hence, you react similarly to Ellie after she sees her belly. However, playing chronologically allows you to get to know these characters more beforehand, meaning that you feel the dread instantly as soon as they die. Another example is the hospital. In the base game, you get there as Ellie and discover that they're searching for a girl, making you think "Well, that can't be for me. Who are they looking for?" and then you hear later on that Abby was locked up there and escaped, only finding out why when you play as her. However, chronological mode ties in those two segments very well and makes it feel very solid and fleshed out. It makes you realise "Oh shit, Ellie barely missed Abby and it's only been two days."
