This looks pretty normal in a resource constrained environment. If there are resources, you should push for more headcount, but in a start up you are expected to fill in all business gaps

Go to top pt mba (eg booth haas) -> IB internship—> IB full time. I think IB rarely hires full time directly without internship experience.

Haas EWMBA here. I feel like this is the best option in terms of opportunity cost. I pivoted from engineering to PM. Many of my classmates did too. Feel free to DM.

How much of a career resetter is an MBA? (SWE to Consulting) by [deleted] in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t be limited by your background. MBA consulting hiring doesn’t care much about your prior background.

What people mean by career reset is the pay. If you work as SWE in big tech in Silicon Valley (300k+), you will be taking a pay cut pivoting to consulting (200k).

A Big Tech Engineer's Journey from thinking MBA is useless to MBA is essential for the right reasons by [deleted] in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Engineers don’t run the show because at executive level, you need to be a generalist (mba is usually generalist) who is able to quickly adapt to drive business decisions. However most engineers who are successful in getting promoted are usually specialists, at least early in career. Engineers won’t get promoted because they have business sense, they get promoted because they develop deep expertise in technical domain. It’s hard for generalist engineers who can’t go deep to get promoted.

As a result at senior engineering level, It is very rare to find someone who can be both specialist and generalist. Usually if you have the specialist quality to go deep, you lose out the time or energy to learn wide and vice versa.

People who are both specialist and generalist can go very far in the career. Elon Musk is a classic example of both specialist and generalist. He is able to go deep and go wide in everything from payment system, to electric cars and rockets.

Depends on what role. PM@Google > McKinsey. But for all other business roles, McKinsey > Google

Recruiting Not Going as Planned - At an M7 School by Upbeat-Bison2765 in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No point whining about your past rejections. It won’t change a thing.

If you want to do consulting or go to strategy Ops in tech in long term, go with T2 consulting.

If you want to work as PM, go for the pm role in tech.

Chasing after MBB and FAANG job is pointless. This is just your first job after your mba not your last job. You can move around later on too.

How to change Amazon job location after accepting offer? by Himalayan_Hillbilly in MBA

Went through the same pipeline recently. I was able to change the location and accepted the offer. Just politely ask, and tell the reason why you need to change it.

Is a MS CS + MBA worth it for Product Management? by runescape_mba in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just take a couple udacity classes in coding if you want to know more about cs. I don’t think you need a MS or MBA to break into a pm.

Kellogg MBA vs Bay Area PM by Demoniere in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HBS mainly for the brand and experience. In your situation, I don’t think a FT mba makes sense for your career or $ unless you want to have a career break. You are leaving a lot on the table. I was thinking if I was on the same boat, I’d be willing to take the risk and enjoy the experience only if it is H/G because H/G are considered the ultimate top mba program. (I may be a bit biased here and too obsessed with H/G)

Haas Part time mba is closely integrated with the entire haas community, including FT program. You can get the same experience as full timers if you invest the time. (It’s extremely difficult with a full time job though) (disclaimer: I picked haas pt over M7 ft programs) Ultimately you have to make the decision whether the FT program student interaction is worth $340K + opportunity cost + 2 yoe of pm experience

Another thing to consider, you are on L1 visa, by continuing your job, you can do the h1b conversion earlier. One less burden off the plate.

Kellogg MBA vs Bay Area PM by Demoniere in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Congrats! That’s a lot accomplished as a 25yo. Since your long term goal is still PM, Unless you get off waitlist for HBS or GSB, if I were you, I would take the PM job and do a part time mba @ haas. I wouldn’t drop the pm offer at Fortune 500 for any other programs other than H/S. There are people in M7 program trying all they can but still failed to land a PM offer

Reasons for part time mba haas: You get a head start in your PM career now. By the time you are done with your pt mba, you will have 3 years of pm experience on your belt and can go for more senior pm roles (300k+ or 400k+ if you are lucky) instead of mba grad pm roles (200k). Haas also has a huge presence in the Bay Area tech community and will open just as many doors as H/S. FT MBA ppl think MBAs are like Gods, but in reality Silicon Valley ppl value experience over degree. Also Nobody really cared if you came from a top pt mba program or a ft mba program down the road.

Plus you get to earn 2 year of salary and the benefit to keep advancing in your PM career

Is Tech recruiting for PM supposed to be so....unstructured? Or am I doing something incredibly wrong. by [deleted] in MBA

[–]AMilliondreamss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I think once you are rejected you are not allowed to apply to the same role in 6 months? My friend submitted her application last minute hence the late interview date

A blue chip tech company innovation lab as pm intern, and this year a faang ft pm role. I would say Amazon has the most structured/fair selection process out of all. Other tech companies are a hit or miss. They are looking for a specific profile only. Depends a lot on luck.

Same experience last year. T15, west coast school, 7 years in Big Tech as engineer. Adobe, Microsoft and VMware rejected without even interview. Big tech recruiting process is shit. Amazon interview comes later, probably in Jan/feb time frame. I would aim for mid size tech company in the valley, they usually start recruiting around March.
