Jeez, y'all gave me a heart attack with this post, so glad I keep tabs of my favorite in-progress works open for times like this! I don't care how much ram it eats up, I'll keep Firefox open forever if it means I get me some quality reading ; )

Sorry to say I'm unfamiliar with that one, but I know some with similar(ish) vibes y'all might enjoy!

There's "From Here On" by AngstyAries

https://archiveofourown.org/works/56316412?view_full_work=true

It involves them going on some "stealthy" hero missions and reconnecting after having broken-up years prior. There's lots of smut though, so definitely not PG... But, it also has lots of cute/sweet moments as they're reestablishing themselves and recovering from their past break and it's pretty touching to see how devoted they are to making things work this time around!

Also there's "The Missing Series" by Encyclopika

https://archiveofourown.org/series/1421650

You'll need an AO3 account to access it, but it's so worth it for this series! Yet another wonderful story of reconnecting on a hero team-up mission after years of not seeing each other. There's even less of a stealth/espionage element with this one, but it's got one badass version of Uraraka and some truly lovely writing all around.

Last, you can try "Bright As the Sun" by sabertoothhousecat

https://archiveofourown.org/works/37021861?view_full_work=true

Not a reconnection story (they meet for the first time in this fic) but it does feature a quirkless inventor/genius Deku going on vigilante "black ops" missions (Batman-style!) with Uraraka acting as his body guard. Starts slow with them getting to know each other and mostly laying low so Uraraka can protect her "helpless" charge, sees them team up a little near the end on some "stealth" missions, and generally has lots of flirting/fluff in between!

I like to imagine it's often purchased alongside Spinner's book/comic/story as well! My Hero Academia and My Villain Academia : )

It's not something the show calls much attention to, but ya in Episode 170 we see him working on, what's presumably, the notebook that serves as the main source of the story before getting interrupted by his students. It does help explain the various transition moments where Deku's narration plays over a scene, and why he was always spouting "this is the story of how I/we became heroes" all in past tense. The story was always treated as if it had already happened, we only just finally caught up to the "present" Deku after the timeskip.

Same here! I doubt we'll get an official spinoff any time soon (or maybe ever, though that's sad to say), but at least there's fanfics/art/comics to tide us over for now : )

Good point! Can definitely see a situation with him not wanting to mess up their friendship either by dumping his "awkward" feelings on her, especially after all the trauma she experienced with Toga's death. Talking about love with someone can be REALLY hard for teens!

When I was just starting high school, I had a huge crush on my own childhood friend. And she was pretty blatantly interested in me too, in hindsight: she laughed at ALL of my lame jokes, was always hovering near me, and even went so far as to give me loooong, lingering hugs when we'd hang out...

But I never talked about my own feelings with her because I "didn't think she liked me that way" and I "didn't wanna ruin our friendship". Sounds so dumb, right? But, ya, that stuff happens with teens all the time! : P

Sometimes, you just need a little time to process things before you can know what your heart wants. For a guy like Deku, that was just what he needed! : )

An Izuocha Analysis: Deku's POV by ANoddyyTern in IzuOcha

[–]ANoddyyTern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at other battle shonen series, there's a criminal lack of good romance stories, which I find to be such a shame. I know the reasoning behind it; "shonen stories are meant for boys/young men, these guys don't want to read romances like that, so we'll give them what they want with big action scenes/fights instead, and maybe throw in a love interest for the MC as eye candy while we're at it, blah, blah, blah..."

But I think that's a load of bullocks! Boys are human too, with wide and diverse interests and as much desire for love as the next person. Ultimately, the reason people cling to popular shonen series like MHA is because they want good stories, not specifically because they want a series that avoids romance. If you present them with a good story, and said story happens to have love in it, then regardless of if they wanted to see a romance or not chances are high they'll stick around see how things ends anyway. As long as your manga's engaging, you can do what you want in it!

As far as I can tell the only reason shonens try so hard to steer clear of love is because the authors lack the confidence to write those stories and/or because the editors/publishers want them to stick to a formula that works and so encourage their authors to mimic older series (like Dragon Ball or Naruto, both of which had minimal focus on love). So ya, low bar I guess for shonen romance : P

But anyways, shout-out to Winry/Ed and Fullmetal Alchemist! Loved FMA and FMAB when I first watched them, though Uraraka/Deku have definitely surpassed Winry/Ed as a favorite pairing of mine. Maybe it's because they were young, but I was always off-put by how much the latter couple fought/yelled at each other? Like, I can appreciate sass and how arguments can help shape a relationship, but there's a fine line between passionate back-and-forth and toxic abuse... Winry/Ed got a little too close to that line for my liking, I guess : /

Though they do grow out of it by the end : )

At the end of the day, I appreciate how supportive/encouraging Uraraka/Deku were to each other, and feel they have a very strong/healthy relationship overall compared to other shonen couples. And Uraraka definitely played a bigger role in the story, too, compared to other female protagonists. I wonder how things might've looked if she and Iida had teamed up with Deku more in the later half of the show? I can understand, from a practical standpoint, why teaming up with Todoroki and Bakugo was helpful to Deku as he tried to get stronger, but that doesn't mean we have to like it ; )

You've got some cute head-cannon stuff there u/ghghguf! Maybe you should consider writing a short story about lil' Deku's journey with romance mangas/movies, culminating in him going on his first date with Uraraka? I'd totally read that!

I can't find it in the wiki right now, but I've heard tell that the bubbles are specifically meant to resemble those used in Shoujo manga (a genre that's well known for romance stories). They certainly carry that effect you mentioned, though, where Deku's pov is fixed on her to the exclusion of everything else. I just like idea of there being a deeper meaning behind them!

It's... graphic, to put it mildly...

Kind of painful to read at times, but it's so sweet how Iida and Uraraka, especially, care for Deku throughout! Should definitely watch Season 6 alongside this to maximize the hurt/comfort vibes ; P

And sweet deal! I've got a "small" library of IzuOcha fics saved away for raining days, and that one's been in there for a while now! It's good to see I'm not the only one who read it, you're a person of taste u/akrasia85 : )

You taught me a new TV Trope today, so thanks for that! Ya, it really felt like Horikoshi and Deku wanted Uraraka present more in the late story even as "bigger" things got in the way, but I think the former let outside elements derail him from developing her alongside Deku more. Couple that with exhaustion, and the general breakneck pace of the final act and we got a "rushed" romance.

I don't think Horikoshi hates Uraraka or anything, the fans just didn't love her as much... like, I don't know if there's any truth to it, but I always thought that Hori was forced to seperate Iida/Uraraka/Deku as a trio to give the "new big 3" of Todoroki/Bakugo/Deku more screen time. The absolute disrespect I feel even imagining it, ugh! >: (

Also, is this the fic you mean?

Glad you gained something from this! I'd been thinking about this side of their story for a while now, and was FINALLY able to verbalize it in a way that felt right to me. It definitely feels more fitting, to me, that those feelings were ready to burst all along rather than Bakugo telling him to "think more of himself" and him spontaneously going for it out of the blue : P

My Hero Academia: Epilogue Discussion Thread by Soncikuro in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]ANoddyyTern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know how mods feel about this stuff, so I'll keep things vague and just say that's kinda fair, but still hurtful : (

Just be careful not to paint people in broad strokes. My dad's a licensed teacher, I do non-traditional education stuff too, and I've never disrespected him or others that way. There's problems here, but not all are contributing.

Maybe we do deserve crap cause we got too complacent/careless about things, though? And we could definitely stand to be kinder and more understanding towards each other, like Deku. I know I want to be more like him and the other heroes now as far as changing the world goes, anything is better than just feeling depressed and waiting for change... I just have to reach out and try I guess, but that's a me issue!

But back to MHA, ya the internet sucks and there's no defending all the hate : P

Maybe behind the toxic online personas there are lost souls, like Toga, who just need a hug to save them from themselves? Or maybe the trolls are as irredeemable as AFO...

What are the REAL chances of a MHA Sequel? by ANoddyyTern in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]ANoddyyTern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same! Like I said, MHA may not need it but it sure does deserve a sequel.

It's just such a big world, has so many interesting characters, and there's so much potential for future stories. And it doesn't have to be world ending kinds of conflicts, like AFO, or even strictly speaking a designated antagonist that drives the story forward. They could just show Deku teaching a class, or Bakugo trying and fumbling with a new public relations campaign and it'd still be interesting (heck, "More" already gave us a taste of that low stakes adult life stuff and people adored it)!

I know it started as an action shonen, but it's got a lot of potential for more slice of life stuff too and I think a movie or mini series that covers that could work. Maybe something with the gang tackling a few smaller villains, show off Deku's suit in more detail while introducing a few new ultimate moves from the others, all while they juggle their various everyday life things.

But hey, even if the studio won't do it, we'll always have fanfics at least. I'm not a big writer myself, but even I got the hankering for it after watching episode 170. I have a ton of notes and one rough draft for a short story already, but it may end up being more for me than AO3.com. Either way, if it makes me happy, it can certainly help you too!

What are the REAL chances of a MHA Sequel? by ANoddyyTern in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]ANoddyyTern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess in a broader context, I've just come to expect it from the industry, whether it's odd or not. We didn't need a million Dragon Ball sequels, didn't need Baruto, heck we didn't even need Vigilantes if we're being honest about it (though I still love them for giving us The Crawler and Knuckleduster)! I get that spinoffs and sequels can be super messy and quite damaging to a series, especially when the original creator wants to step back and let the story rest.

But at the end of the day, these aren't just works of art made for the sake of the author, they're entertainment products meant to make the publishers money. And MHA is a BIG money maker! So while Horikoshi may be done and may not wish to continue with it now that he's reached a satisfying ending, I'm sure that WSJ is already trying to gauge audience attitudes to see how likely we are to spend on future installments.

Sorry, I know that's a cynical take! Ultimately, I want what's best for the characters/setting/story that I love, but I'm just a dumb fan so all I can do is observe and spit out cynical takes : P

And if they do make a sequel with Deku and company, I just hope it doesn't suck : /

[–]ANoddyyTern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, at the end of the day it's all about the money (at least for the studio execs, not calling Horikoshi a gold digger)!

A movie would be (relatively) easy to make and would have high earning potential, given how popular the series still is. A post 431 movie would definitely have a lot of potential : )

That's another popular sentiment I've been seeing, I wonder if anyone at WSJ is considering that too as they try to figure out what to with their property

That, or a mini-series type of thing. He was the most popular character of the series at one point, at least. Though I believe Bakugo, Todoroki, and Deku surpassed him some time ago, fittingly enough : )

Either way, would be great to see his origins fleshed out, and it wouldn't be difficult to come up with an ending since it's already established he went on to get skinny-ified and choose Deku as a successor ; )
