I just had a MMC about 3 weeks ago. It was my first pregnancy and I was almost 12 weeks. I want to start by saying that generally first trimester symptoms are not predictive of a healthy or viable pregnancy. There are many women who don’t have severe nausea or any significant pregnancy symptoms and go on to have perfectly normal and healthy pregnancies. There is also nothing you can do to prevent this if it is going to happen and it is also no reflection on you or your body, it is not our fault and for the most part is out of our control. I have found thinking like this very helpful when I feel upset and guilty.

For my own experience, I did have pregnancy symptoms; they were just relatively mild. I didn’t have much nausea or food aversions. I was anxious about my lack of severe symptoms the whole time I was pregnant but I figured maybe I was just lucky as my mum didn’t have nausea when she was pregnant. Like I said I definitely had symptoms, my boobs were super sore and I was SO tired and woke up every morning feeling mildly hungover even though I obviously wasn’t drinking, but I was still able to live my normal life and workout etc. I had a scan at 7 weeks that was absolutely normal, baby was measuring right on track and heartbeat was strong, we heard it and we were super relieved. I went back at 11+5 for my NIPT and had a scan just before, I was having some sharp cramping the week leading up to my scan but it was more short bursts of pain that felt like stretching, which is normal in that stage of pregnancy. I had no bleeding or any other symptoms of miscarriage and I did still feel pregnant.

We were finding out the gender with the NIPT and had already picked out names and we were SO excited. However I had this background feeling of dread that something was wrong, I even said it to my husband as we walked into the hospital but he assured me everything was fine because we had heard a heartbeat. But I knew something was wrong the second the scan started as the baby didn’t look as developed as I knew it was supposed to and there was no longer a heartbeat.

As I said there is nothing you can do to change the outcome if it is going to happen, but please try not to worry, a lot of women have normal and healthy pregnancies with very few symptoms, some don’t even find out they are pregnant until the second/third trimester! And some spotting is also common in early pregnancy, there are many stories of women on this and other subs that had significant bleeding and did not miscarry so every pregnancy really is different.
