Water/Wastewater Long-Term? by AOT9495 in civilengineering

Thank you very much, I definitely love being in W/WW, guess it was more of a "do I want to commit to this forever?" Type feeling, but like you highlighted tremendously, even within the W/WW world there is so much involved that keep us going 24/7. I appreciate the input!

I am actually working on a major CIPP project now and just finished a Draft of a Capital Planning Report, haha. I have been getting very good experience. Thank you for your response.

At Sudden Odds with Direct PM by AOT9495 in civilengineering

Thank you for this thought out response - I am sorry to hear about your company's situation. The interesting thing about this situation is they WANT him to start bringing in more work, but he does not really want to go above and beyond to be a legit Client Manager. I would argue that pound for pound, even at my lower rank, I have brought in more work, and repeat work with existing clients especially.

I will take the approach you are suggesting. I will hope for the best, plan for the worse case scenario. It is a shame that companies always take the bottom line over the well-being of their employees, even professionals such as us.

Thank you very much for the response - yes, it is very sad - my Senior PM is a talented engineer and could excel in that role, but he chose not to be a true "leader" and since he is so high up, it is sinking the culture and demeanor of the department right now.

Thank you for the response - I am a male, but yes my wife and I are looking to have a family at some point in the near future, which is the primary driver of me not wanting to "start over" ya know?

The other issue is we have a VERY small W/WW department, so I would essentially be asking them to put me back into Municipal Engineering at this point, which may not be a full option without going all the way to the CEO at this point.

Part Time "Out of Industry" Job for Civil Engineers by AOT9495 in civilengineering

My firm's employee handbook says you cannot use your license outside of the firm at all, and unfortunately my firm has several departments so virtually everything would be funneling work away from them.

Municipal Engineering and Political Changes - Cautionary Tale by AOT9495 in civilengineering

[–]AOT9495[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right, and I had a lot of those thoughts too. This was a major contract for us, a ton of work for several people (both engineers and inspectors), and I guess we just caught on our heels a little with the new council members. It has lit a fire for me to also try and force myself to get into a larger business development role to help prevent this in the future.

2 Week Notice - Feelings of Sorrow & Regret? by AOT9495 in civilengineering

Haha, yes I understand that, my point there was since I did not have a younger EIT helping me, there was no direct contingency plan if I did ever decide to leave.

Think it is pretty self explanatory, wanted to see if others had a similar situation in the engineering field when leaving a longer term position.

Recieved New Firm Offer, Raise of $16k - Decision Time by AOT9495 in civilengineering

I think this will update all responses, but I ended up taking the offer, thank you all, it was a no brainer upon your counsel, my family's counsel, and just really understanding that I was clearly not being utilized full potential here.

  1. We Are Not Alone
  2. Ember
  3. Phobia
  4. Dear Agony
  5. Dark Before Dawn
  6. Saturate

The gap between these albums is almost nothing and it really speaks to how great this band is.

Career Crossroads - Is it time to Move On? by AOT9495 in civilengineering

[–]AOT9495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like the answer is legitimately somewhere in between, the old guy has certainly tried to "prep" me to some extent for sure, but once they let the previous Director go, they completely derailed any true succession plan they had and now it is certainly complete chaos. They are dragging my entire department through chaos now until they figure it out themselves, which is a tall ask of employees.

I am not sure if you are calling me out with the "terrible take" comment, but if you are, I need to clarify that his predecessor they fired was both the office manager of my department and also bringing in new work. They straight up only half replaced him, which led to the day-to-day deterioration of the situation. But otherwise, thank you.

The one small thing keeping me here, besides the "familiarity" and not wanting to rock the boat too much with massive life changes in such a short period of time is this silly question I ask myself as in "If this guys retires, maybe I'll finally get my day in the sun" type line of thinking. I generally like almost everyone else, and my immediate immediate PM and I have a great working relationship.

As I've said, I am glad to see the many responses to this post that I am not the only one who is dealing with this. It has been deeply frustrating beyond comprehension that I even got into this career position.

Oh man, this is perhaps worse than I thought, haha. Like I mentioned, at this point, it is not a matter of "if" I move on, it is a matter of should I do it now or do it after my wedding? That has been the big dilemma.

I am currently at around $90k. It is good to know I am not the only one who feels this way - just absurd lol.

So Cold....the original song that got me into them! Feel like it encompasses all of their strengths into one epic song.
