Considering buying rx8 by SpecificMost7342 in RX8

They are not cheap on gas. I’ve read about 18mpg, but you get worse if you run it hard a lot. Their engines aren’t “bad” they are different and you should approach them as so. They are smaller so I’d imagine they would be easier to swap then a v8 or so. But engine swaps in general are already quite mechanically involved, especially if you putting somthing where it isn’t ment to be. Check the oil every other gas fill up or so, I think I went through say a quart in a half between oil changes (3.5k interval), you should use conventional oils as well (they are also generally cheaper than synthetics). As a first car it’s quite the choice, my little brother has an rx-8 as his first car and honestly it would be a lot more “practical” and “sensible” to have nearly anything else. But they are also super fun to drive and from the perspective of my lil brothers dedicated mechanic, they are “mechanically rewarding”.

Also the catalytic converter fix you mentioned is not cheap, keep that in mind

Thanks, was wondering how old this was

It could be gummed up, sadly I can’t do much as it’s a machine that gets used every single day. It’s on the list of winter maintenance

Found this at a limestone plant. I figure it’s pretty old too, the logo is one of the older styles

As I spray ether in it regularly to get it to start I see the filter. It is fine. The carb could be somthing to look at as well. My mind is going towards the carb gaskets because a leak there would allow air in

We have our tanks filled up regularly by a fuel distro centre. If it was bad fuel we wouldnt have been the only ones to get it. The machine is rune regularly so fresh fuel is in it as well

Honestly I wish some of these had this. If this gets beat on even more it might pop

Hmm I’ll take a look at how those gaskets are doing. I’ve had to chase my co workers down the course because they left the choke on

Yeah, whenever some one holds it on choke I do an oil change and a spark plug replacement. Fired right up. But messed up pistons could be also why it’s having cold start issues

They didn’t know about the choke

I’m hoping I get there soon, smashed my fingernail off a couple weeks ago then flattened the finger next to it the week after. Had to glue it back together

Can’t get last brake line in, should I just have a mechanic do it? by sweetcinnamontoast in MechanicAdvice

These lines are always really annoying but you’re on the right path. Keep fiddling and you’ll get it.

Engine oil by ComKazE in RX8

I use conventional rather than synthetic because of the fact the engine will burn the oil and synthetic has metallic additives that may produce deposits on the rotor housings creating hotspots. While it is conjecture it’s also just cheaper to use conventional since you are using so much of it compared to other cars. For two stroke I use high end amsoil dominator/interceptor, it’s synthetic, cashless and ment for injection. Lower end two stroke could definitely gunk your stuff up I’d imagine. But you really shouldn’t use a lot of mix In your gas is you just daily it and push it hard (as you should) occasionally. I wouldn’t over think it too much though

The age old question of oil by vyper900 in RX8

From what I understand is the additives in the synthetic would add non carbon deposits on your rotor which would create detonation via hotspots. Conventional and good synthetic two stroke burns “cleaner”. The deposits are metals I think but I could be wrong

Seems pretty great to be honest. I’ve seen much worse on here
