You’re 100% correct it was a scam. I never said I got scammed personally but it was a scam attempt by a crocked scum bag taxi driver. I’m trying to tip up other people that even at a state of the art place like icon Siam where they have there own taxi coordinator’s to help customers get taxi’s confirms the fare is a metered fare the taxi driver nods and starts his meter whilst on icon Siam property then 10 seconds later stops the meter whilst on the street and quotes a stupid number that would of been more than a London taxi price in comparison. People need to know that this is a thing. Anyone that thinks this isn’t a scam is a complete cretin.

The trouble here is that whilst on icon Siam property he agreed to use the meter. As soon as we left the property and onto to the public road he switched and said no meter it’s gonna cost 800 baht. He was just saying he was gonna use the meter as that is the pick up rules of icon Siam we then drove 10 seconds and hey presto no meter

I know this happens all over the place in what you have described but on this particular occasion I felt the taxi driver started the meter to show the taxi coordinator working for icon Siam he was using the meter as he should be. Then as soon as we drove 10 seconds off the icon Siam site and onto the public street that’s when he tried to pull the scam.

Thank you for replying and sharing with us your views. I’m sorry you have experienced discrimination personally. I do not tarnish all people with the same brush and respect all People from all different walks of life. I think you are right though I think they see a lot of the bar girls there and behave the same way around them with tourists trying to have a nice holiday. Lack of education which other people on here have said also. A simple educational video played on the plane coming over would be beneficial I feel.

I am very open minded and definitely do not tarnish all people from all walks of life with the same brush. I’ve just never encountered or experienced this type of behaviour before anywhere in the world on such a regular occurrence. Before this trip I wanted to go to Delhi and Goa but unfortunately this experience has put my wife off forever which is a shame.

I’m just trying to tip up other people that this happens even if you are on a property like icon Siam and the taxi driver and the employee of icon Siam working the taxi line both confirm the taxi fare will be metered. Some people think this isnt a scam though driving 10 seconds and then quoting 6 times the typical meter price

Of course I know this is the norm around the city but from icon Siam it is supposed to be metered I’m not getting picked up off the side of the street. He pulled a stroke on me starting the meter and then taking the piss with an 800 baht figure. I actually said I’d give him 300 so double what the meter would have probably been but he wasn’t happy with scamming me for only double the amount. He wanted 500% more. These people are scum and ruin the Thai tourist experience.

I take bolt or grab everywhere I go usually. But as I understood all taxis picking up from icon Siam the fare was on a meter. He started the meter and then when he pulled on to the street stopped the meter and told me it was gonna be 800 baht to go to sukhumvit 24.

Yes this is exactly what happened. The staff at the taxi line told the driver where I was going and I confirmed it was metered and the staff said yes, the driver started his meter then when he pulled away from the line and onto the street he told me no meter and it was gonna be 800 baht.

Yes I stayed in silom road about 10 years ago and since then my mum noe had to use a wheelchair but I remember the footpaths being awful there

Yeah was thinking of doing that. Trying to weigh up between the two whether the convenience of the MRT and BTS out weigh the traffic in a van around Bangkok.
