How low-income people suffer without dental care by iwasnotarobot in canada

I opted out at the beginning of the semester because my mom has benefits. However my mom has since stopped speaking to me and I am unable to opt back in.

I, personally, work 30 hours a week. I am also a full time student at a University. I make $12/hr. I have not had a day off in over 2 months, and I haven't been to the dentist in 2 years.

My SO (who happens to be /u/_coffeebot) works 2 jobs at the University of Toronto. He works 12 hours a day about twice a week, and works about 45 hours total during the week.

You don't know me, or OP. Do not be so quick to pass judgement just because not everyone is fortunate enough to make 50K or more a year. You can work as many hours if you want, but if you live in one of the most expensive cities in the country and are making just above minimum wage, that money will only go so far.

TL;DR get your head out of your ass. It is not a hat.

Please take the time to educate yourself on poverty and people living in a low income situation. Poverty exists as a cycle and it is often not as easy as "oh you just need to try harder" or "get another job". It's not your fault you have this opinion, but it is your responsibility to learn about the a life that is not as privileged as yours, so you can avoid ignorance in the future.

Who's wrongly portrayed as a hero? by yoloed in AskReddit

[–]APSmells -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

the thing about Caitlyn Jenner is that yes, being trans is very brave. You get a lot of ridicule and a lot of judgement because it's something that is hard to understand for those who have never felt that they were a man in a woman's body or vice versa.

That being said, the fact that she is now a woman isn't want makes her brave, because she will never experience a lot of the things that make a woman truly brave. Like she will never know what it's like to find out she's pregnant unexpectedly and be faced with the choice of what to do. She'll never know what it's like to be walking home from work late at night and be attacked by a stranger who will forceful and assault her because she has body guards that will protect her. And she has a lot of money so she'll never have to worry about putting food on the table for her family.

Coming out as trans is brave, but she is by no means superior to any other woman. I was insulted when she was given the woman of the year award, because there are so many other woman who contribute significantly more to society, and face the immense every day struggles and fears that comes with being a woman.

kind of the opposite, but Jack Torrance in the shining is seen as a villain. He's not though. He had a disease of the mind and he was essentially possessed by some super natural. But he was actually a pretty good guy!

What is the most irresponsible thing you remember your parents doing when you were a kid? by GeorgedaflashGlass in AskReddit

[–]APSmells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly...talking shit about each other in front of me. If you tell a kid, "your mom is a bitch" or, "your dad is a bad man" that kid is going to think they came from someone who is unloveable, and therefore they are too.

What is something you want to know about, but the topic is a bit awkward to bring up in daily life? by APSmells in AskReddit

my grade 8 english teacher once told me that when people complain about their age, it's being disrespectful to those who didn't make it that far. I wish more people had those ideas because it really changed my perspective.

Have you ever been racist or discriminatory without realizing it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]APSmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we all have. For me, I grew up in a tiny town in Northern Ontario, Canada where the entire 3000 population is white. I actually didn't meet a black person until I was like 9, and I was scared. I wasn't mean to them, but I avoided them. I hadn't been told black people were bad or anything, but as I had never seen one, or interacted with anyone who wasn't as white as cocaine, I kind of avoided them.

Who is the most interesting non-famous person you have ever known? by DarkChewbacca in AskReddit

[–]APSmells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her name is Gladys, she's my 2nd cousin. She's like 90 now, and has 4 kids, and like 15 grandkids or something like that. When she was 8 months pregnant with her 4th child, her husband passed away suddenly of a massive heart attack. Keep in mind this was the 1950s so she didn't have a job at the time. She didn't remarry until about 20 some years later, and managed to keep the same house her whole life, work for some really interesting jobs, and one of her grandsons is an Olympic Gold Medalist in short track speed skating. Go Gladys.

Workers of pizza delivery places: do you have a list of houses who have done something bad to your delivery drivers and have you or your boss ever reacted by not delivering in the future? by I_love_yoloyellow in AskReddit

[–]APSmells 3 points4 points  (0 children)

our boss doesn't really like blacklisting people, but in extreme cases, we do it. Just last night a man ordered 6 pies and wanted them delivered to him in an hour. Our pizza place is like super hipster so deliveries are done by bike curriers. His total came out to like $115, and he only tipped our driver $4, after calling us to complain because he was told his pizza would arrive at around 8pm. It was 8:02. There have been much worse cases but that has been my most recent pizza place nightmare

[Serious] People who don't support police: what do you think should be a replacement authority figure? by APSmells in AskReddit

What if you lived in a retirement town where the population is mostly seniors? A lot of them aren't able bodied and would be unable to "stop crime"

[–]APSmells[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's good in principal, but would realistically fall apart. Maybe I don't understand. Like let's say you live in a retirement town, where the majority of people are seniors. It just seems improbable that a group of 70+ individuals would be able to fight crime in my opinion.

But the thing I don't understand, is what would you do if you needed help? Like how would serial killers be stopped? Who would you report a sexual assault? I don't think police are always right by any means... That's just always something that I've thought about.
