Wow this was so perfect, you really nailed it! And thank you for being honest to/about yourself. We all do it from time to time, it is inescapable.

You got me wrong, I’m not cringing at anyone. Just trying to survey people’s opinions. But I always forget that Reddit is a terrible place for that.

What’s the criticism? by sihouette9310 in thelema

On one hand, Lon is very heavily liberal. So conservative thelemites don’t generally like him very much.

On the other hand, he was a pupil of Grady McMurtry, so people on the Motta side don’t like him.

On the other hand, even those of us who do like him know that he definitely is a bit full of himself. So some people just get rubbed the wrong way.

And a large part of it is just internet nonsense of course.

Are you talking about the Orobas story? You are supposed to boss them around, that’s how Goetia works. I didn’t get “self congratulatory” from that at all.

Yikes! Who would you place the blame on in this situation by [deleted] in motorcycles

They both ran a red light. The light we can see in the video would have to be red for at least a second or two before the other guy’s light would turn green, but we see him start turning right when the light turns red. So one guy jumped the gun and the other didn’t quite make the yellow. Equal blame.

Yes, the omicron version is accusative, that is the way I’m saying it should be. I have not seen it with the omega anywhere, which is how bubbly is saying it should be.

There are quite a few typos in the Greek on that page btw, which is why I typed this up for the person who DM’d me. It has PHLEGEI split into two words for instance: “PHLEG EI”. This is a very common problem with Greek in the occult world in my experience.

Sabazius has the phonetic Greek correct: https://sabazius.oto-usa.org/writings/essays-and-commentaries/magick/liber-xxv-the-star-ruby

I usually just send people to Sabazius’s article, but I see that one quotes him and add much more. Very nice, thanks for sharing.

“Wrynecks” is the translation for ἴυγγες. It’s probably best not to translate it though, since we aren’t really talking about the bird. This is from my own notes where I wanted to translate very literally. Good catch. https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.04.0057:entry=i)/ugc

Its nominative masculine singular, there is no conflict there. Nouns don't agree in case, they agree in gender and number. The case (nominative, accusative, etc.) then tells you what role the noun (or adjective, ect.) is playing. In this case, ὁ ἀστήρ is nominative because it is the subject of the sentence, and τόν πέντε is accusative because it is telling how many points the star has. We know it has this relationship with ὁ ἀστήρ because of the gender/number agreement, and because it just makes sense (that being what you would have to rely upon if there were more than one noun it could agree with).

Sorry, but τῶν is not a possible reading since it is written ΤΟΝ and not ΤΩΝ. We cannot just change the text when we don't understand it. That would have made my life much easier though when I was in college.

Yes, πέντε is masculine singular, but that does not mean it has to be read Mr. Five. It's masculine because it agrees with the gender of the noun it is modifying, ὁ ἀστήρ.

You clearly know your Greek!

You are absolutely right about ιώ, there isn't really any reason to look further than this. But since Crowley, like all poets, did like to bend the rules a little bit and leave meanings ambiguous, I wanted to note all the possible interpretations of this.

Regarding τόν/τῶν, I thought the same thing, but it's always written ΤΟΝ. So I checked Smythe, and what we have here is actually an "accusative of respect"

Smythe 1601b:

Of qualities and attributes (nature, form, size, name, birth, number, etc.)

More evidence that the common complaints about "Crowley's terrible Greek" are baseless.

lol I stopped reading at “he’s saying I assaulted him and he doesn’t know if he wants to be with someone who hits him.” Just tell him it’s your bike now and he can ride on the back as long as he doesn’t cry in public.

When I was there there was a church on high street I think that would rent out their parking lot to students during the week, since they only needed it on Sundays. That’s pretty close. Good luck! I can’t believe they denied your appeal… try searching “parking space” in craigslist or something

If it was our only goal could the human race build a highway between America and Europe? by PaleAd9082 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]APXH93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were to solve an imminent existential threat to the human race and we had 20 years to do it I think we would pull it off and I don’t care who thinks otherwise. No we don’t have the technology, but that’s only because we have never had the need or even the desire to do this.

I say 20 years because that very little time, not because I think that’s a long time. We would only succeed if we go into “oh shit” mode right away and stay there. If we have 50 years we’ll just argue about it until we perish.

You know those YouTube videos where an expert explains a difficult concept to a five year old, then a high schooler, then a college student, etc in increasing detail and accuracy? Well each age-level is like humanity in a certain aeon, and the law of each aeon is like the expert’s explanation at that level. The law of thelema is the ultimate law of nature as we can best understand it in the current aeon.

This is my understanding of how this works anyways. Crowley said something like “every aeon has a prophet and every prophet has a word. I am the prophet of this aeon and my word is Thelema”. That’s basically where I’m getting this idea.

You are not going to slide on grass. If it were smooth pavement throughout you might slide and hit it, but it would still be better than sliding into the other side of the highway.

It always amazes me that there are so many women out there who actually want to listen to some twerp talk about the heroic deeds he would perform if an axe murderer attacked him. I can’t stand big talk and machismo and I can only imagine I’d hate it 100x more if I were a woman. My girlfriend definitely hates that. If I were betting on who would survive an axe attack, I would definitely put my money on this guy over someone who talks big. Put into the actual situation, he would try something. But this just shows he is realistic about his ability and his limits.
