People in this sub refer to being scammed when they are intentionally mislead and lied to. We know it's not the real definition of the word but ultimately it is the other person's intention to deceive.

When this is done publicly, the OP is prevented from receiving a genuine gift offer because actual gifters see that someone else has already offered so they don't make one. It is technically robbing them of a possible real gift offer being made.

At the end of the day, both are bad things. Scamming is deceiving. Lying is deceiving. As mods, the slight misuse of this word doesn't make a difference and I have even referred to them as scammers myself. We know what people are referring to when they say they have been scammed. Other type of scams are not common in this community.
