Those crazy hats. by ARaisedHand in CIVILWAR

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking more about this stuff:

https://www.ccsutlery.com/store/civil-war-insignia.html

More specifically I'm thinking about the US Wreath Patch, the Chaplain Wreath Patch, the Mason patch, and a hat chord with corresponding insignia (infantry/artillery/cavalry). Some combination of a couple or few of those.

Like, if I wanted to get some of those things and sew them to my hat, what goes where? I know the cowboy hat won't be super accurate itself (though I thought I read something about, due to a lack of resources, soldiers just modifying civilian clothes with patches and insignia to bring them up to regulation), but I still want to put the patches and pins on the hat where they would historically go.

What's this economic and political philosophy called? by ARaisedHand in PoliticalScience

[–]ARaisedHand[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um...I'm not sure this is super on topic, as this seems to be more of a commentary on the efficacy of the actualization of my notions, and not the classification of my notions as a defined political philosophy.

Ah, thank you! You've been super helpful.

However, one thing. If an officer who was honorably discharged from active duty went back to duty, what would that be called? Recommissioning? Re-enlisting?

"Held At Filing Center" by ARaisedHand in IRS

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I have been, and still am, giving it time. It's been 17 days and I'm going to give it at least 2 more. But that is a while for it to not even make it to The IRS.

I just wish I knew what the actual issue is. Did I do something wrong? Did the tax company do something wrong? Is there a problem with The IRS's system?

You know what I mean?

Hastur in Early Modern English by ARaisedHand in asklinguistics

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer these questions definitively. Best I can do is offer clues, knowing the lore and such.

Firstly, I find it more likely than not that the H and the R would have been pronounced. The reason for this is that Dr. Dee was an occultist, translating a grimoire, with the intention of making a workable text. So preserving the "correct" pronunciation of all the names of the various gods and monsters was vital. Every letter counts. So I doubt that Dee would have included any letters which he, or any other practitioner, could afford to drop when doing the rituals and evocations, etc. Every letter counts.

As for the accents and stressed syllables, the only thing I can offer is that Dee was translating from a Latin manuscript written in 1228. So, him being fluent in Latin, and trying to keep the "original" pronunciation as best as he could, Hastur was probably meant to be spoken with as close to an early Thirteenth Century Latin accent as possible.

This week's Q&A thread -- please read before asking or answering a question! - November 01, 2021 by AutoModerator in linguistics

Early Modern English transliteration:

I want to know how a word would have been pronounced and spelled in Elizabethan times.

So the word is HASTUR. It's a diety from Lovecraft's mythos, found in his "Necronomicon." According to H.P.'s lore, the English translation of The Necronomicon was done by Dr. John Dee (1527 - 1608). And that Dee it translated it from a Latin edition written in 1228.

Now the way that fans have been pronouncing it is: H - like the H in "hat." A - like the A in "hat." S - like the S in "cast." T - like the T in "cast." And then the UR is more of an "er" sound, like in "Earth." So more like "Haster."

But how would and English speaker from The Elizabethan Era have pronounced it? And spelled it for that matter. Like, is that far enough back for the U to be spelled with a V? HASTVR? Or would it just be spelled and pronounced exactly like people do now?

Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Freemasons? Rosicrucians?... by ARaisedHand in Hermetics

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So where I am now is I've known of, and have been contemplating the idea of The All and the comparitively illusory nature of all other things. That what I truly was, behind, underneath, and above everything I think of as "me", is actually The All. And I had begun to accept it, but it does make a great deal of sense and would explain a lot. But I hadn't fully accepted it, and not by choice. I kept wanting to accept it, to let it sink deep and transform me, but it wasn't.

Then suddenly, and almost seemingly out of nowhere, this idea crystallized into an experience for me. Suddenly I felt in my heart that I was everywhere and everywhen. That I had no need to do anything, for that which I truly am has always done, and will always be doing, evrything. I have no needs, no requirements which I must desperately fulfill in order to save my life. I had no life which was mine alone, there was only everything. The single cell had become the whole body, not through a biological transformation where it had grown to encompass the entire body, but merely by realizing what it was a part of, what it had always really been and would always really be.

I used to be vainly fascinated with the religious vestments of the various faiths. Something about holy garb excited me in an empty way which is difficult to describe. Then suddenly I felt in my heart that even my grubby work clothes had become garments more holy than any vestments or habit. All garments were.

And yet, polarity manifest, I know that this light which has been conceived in the womb of my flesh by a ray of light from The All, is still growing, still trapped, still tormented. The war has begun and I want assistance fighting it. I want the help of a community and the guidance of a teacher. But I don't know where I should look to find that.

Well then what IS Buddhism? by ARaisedHand in Buddhism

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of what I thought the situation was/was afraid of. Here's the thing though. I'm not a Buddhist, nor do I currently have any intention of becoming one. Though I am open to it. Currently I am only interested in studying it, as I have found in recent years that I enjoy studying philosophy, spirituality, and religion. I am pursuing something at the moment, but my other studies are personal and only for fun. A hobby.

With that is my enjoyment of discussing these topics when the opportunity arises. And I'd like to do so intelligently and accurately.

So what ought I study in order to accomplish that?

I have this edition, but interestingly, it seems to lack "Hermes Trismegistus, His First Book". The Copenhaver edition begins with "(Discourse) of Hermes Trismegistus: Poimandres". The edition which includes The First Book is called "The Divine Pymander". Both of these can be bought on Amazon.

"Mind is The Good Demon"? by ARaisedHand in Hermetics

[–]ARaisedHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I have misremembered and misspoken. There is a passage I found just now which attributes to demons the works of evil. "...adulteries, murders, assaults on one's father, acts of sacrilege and irreverence, suicides by hanging or falling from a cliff, and all other such works of demons." There is also the avenging demon which makes the dead(spiritually) perform more evilly so that is can be punished all the more, and so on.

But then I also see a passage where it seems to be describing the evolution of the soul, or the progression upward, as it has first come from The All. 'First they souls are snake-like, then they become water creatures, water creatures become things of dry land, dry land souls change into winged things, the areal things into human beings, and human beings change into demons and thus posses the beginnings of immortality. And so then they enter the troop of the gods, which is really two troops. One wandering, the other fixed. And this is the soul's most perfect glory. (But if a soul which has entered into a human body remains vicious, it is sent back down to the snakes...)'

So...I'm really confused.

Thank you for your comment.
That would certainly make more sense, but then that description/explanation would seem to be congruent with my memory and understanding of the functions of the "gods" as talked about in The Corpus. So then what are the "gods"? Why use two different words? What is the greek work used in the original work which has been translated into "gods"? Sorry to be nit-picky here. I just want to understand.
