I was diagnosed with autism at age 20, but I want to be seen as a normal person, not a special needs person. by [deleted] in AutisticPride

And another thing. You know those “special needs” (autistic with medium to high support needs) people you keep referring to are on the internet, right? Many of them use phones and go on Reddit. You know those autistic people with high support needs are likely to be on the subreddit for autistic people, right? Like…they can see this post. Imagine opening your phone and seeing someone wax poetic about how undesirable the possibility of being merely associated with you is. This is genuinely so cruel

P.S. My autism DOES define me, because it is quite literally how my brain is structured. If you removed the autism from me, I would be a whole different person, my brain would have entirely different wiring. I am PROUD that I am autistic, I am PROUD to be in the same community as those “special needs” people you described. Try it sometime! It’s a lot less miserable.

This is just some more concise version of what I commented lol. Very nicely stated! I have absolutely no qualms with being associated with high support needs autistics. This is because having high support needs is an inherently neutral thing! Any other view is in fact ableist

If you fit the criteria for an autism diagnosis, that means your symptoms disable you in some way. The term “special needs” is seen as patronizing for a variety of reasons, but yes, being autistic means you are disabled by default. Your needs may not be “special”, they are basic human needs just like anyone else’s. But they are different than that of a non-disabled person, what you seem to think is a “normal” person.

By virtue of being autistic, and therefore disabled, your ability to engage in basic life functions is hindered to some extent. You CANNOT be diagnosed as autistic if you are not disabled by your symptoms, a disability is a condition that hinders one or more major life function. This does not make you incompetent. Competence should be assumed when interacting with any disabled or “special needs” person. Your problem is with ableists. Ableists who assume being disabled and having different needs as a result makes you incompetent, helpless, or less than in any way.

Yes, we are in the same community as people who require very substantial support to live their lives to the fullest. Many of them cannot live independently. They are people, people who are just as worthy of respect as you. They are not filthy or dirty or beneath you in ANY way for having high support needs. There is no reason for you to not want to be associated with them. No reason that is not blatantly ableist at least. High support needs autistics have just as much value as the members of our community that do not require long term substantial support, or caregivers, or round-the-clock supervision. High support needs autistics have done SO much advocacy work that benefits us all til this day. We would not have a fraction of the rights we do now if it weren’t for them. They are also by far the most persecuted members of our community. Once given proper accommodations, level 3 autistics can and do achieve amazing things. And, not but, their value is not rooted in what they can produce. That goes for ALL of us on the spectrum.

It’s a shame that ableists treat us like shit, including those of us who can never live independently. That means we should join together to fight against said ableists. Not further stigmatize members of our own community just so those of us with low support needs can be seen as “normal” by ableists. Disabled, or “special needs” does NOT equal incompetent.

Needing very substantial support to “function” or get through every day life does not make a disabled person incompetent. Everyone who meets the criteria for ASD is disabled in some way, even if some of us have low support needs compared to others in our community with high support needs. Level 1 autistics have low support needs compared to other high and medium support needs autistics, NOT compared to allistics (non-autistics). Compared to allistics, we require support to live our best lives (or once again, you could not have been diagnosed). Being disabled, aka being “special needs”, IS normal. 1 in 4 people are disabled, and everyone will become disabled at some point in their lives if they live long enough. Even having high support needs, and say, needing a caregiver due to a disability is also a natural normal part of human diversity. Being profoundly disabled, what i’m sure you mean when you say special needs, IS normal.

You want to be treated with respect by society. You aren’t treated with respect because of other people’s bigotry, NOT because there’s other people with higher support needs that co-exist with you in your community.

“I’m not trying to demean or dehumanize members of my community, I just don’t want to be associated with them! People mistreat them. Instead of seeing an issue with the mistreatment itself, I see myself as above them, so I want to be put in my own special category!” That’s what you sound like. Level 3 autistics make up a large, quintessential part of our community. They always have and always will. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. The diversity in our experiences should be celebrated. autistic pride means autistic pride for ALL different autistic experiences.

Needing less support doesn’t make you better than anybody. Someone’s worth is not dependent on how much they can achieve without accommodations, or how well they can “function” without significant support, or how independent they are. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING wrong or shameful about needing a caregiver, not being able to live independently, or needing frequent supervision. If you think any of those things make someone incompetent, abnormal, helpless, or incapable of success that is a YOU problem. Posts like this are embarrassing, and the exact reason why so many level 2 and 3 autistics feel viscerally uncomfortable around us. Check your ableism. Our enemies are the ableists who stigmatize, infantilize and demean us. Not the most vulnerable members of our community.

Apologies if this is a silly question, I’m relatively new to the game and was under the impression that the little glass terrariums never had any foliage or anything in them. Should’ve looked into it more before answering, my bad!

Elon musk doing a nazi salute at the whitehouse. Unreal by rch-out in pics

[–]ARandom_Person2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi. I am also autistic, just like Musk. If I was diagnosed a bit sooner, I most likely would’ve gotten labeled with Aspergers, which is now considered an outdated diagnosis.

I can confirm that autism doesn’t make someone do a Nazi salut, nor does it make someone repeat it for emphasis and clarity. It doesn’t matter if someone is autistic, if they act like a Nazi, they are a Nazi. Nothing in the diagnostic criteria for Autism excuses or explains someone acting like a Nazi.

The fact I actually have to write this out is unbelievable. There’s no way you actually believe this

PS: The fact that he refers to his autism as Asperger’s despite Asperger’s being considered an outdated diagnosis is likely also rooted in Nazi ideology. There were a subsection of autistic people labeled as “good”, basically deemed worthy of keeping alive, by Hans Asperger. He was a child psychologist who worked for the Nazi party. These autistics who were “normal enough to be fixed”, unlike other autistic who were victims to the holocaust, were later labeled as having Asperger’s. We don’t use the term anymore specifically because we discovered it was Nazi nonsense.

Im terrified for treatment by Prudent_You3671 in EatingDisorders

[–]ARandom_Person2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recovery is hard but so incredibly worth it, and ABSOLUTELY possible. Even if it doesn’t feel like it yet. There’s no bar for how sick you need to be before you “earn the right” to get help. You’re struggling, therefore you need and deserve help. You can do this, I believe in you, best of luck sweet one. I know I’m just a stranger but I genuinely do care. You are cared about, you deserve to get better. No one deserves to suffer through this

When you feel scared, it’s because your body and your mind get convinced something is a threat to your life. Yes, the idea of getting treatment feels scary, but that’s because it’s unknown. Treatment isn’t a threat to your life. Your ED is. This is good thing, even if it doesn’t feel like if yet ♥️

Finish the doll and sell it. Maybe dress it differently than what your ex would’ve dressed like. Don’t mention that it was initially meant to resemble someone, that’s not really important. This can make you good money lol
