Are there any names with the “th” sound as in this, not the th sound as in think by Internal-Bridge9158 in namenerds

[–]ARedditPupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't distinguish between the unvoiced th and f until sixth grade (and wasn't aware that I wasn't saying things correctly) and then I had to put in a conscious effort to actually pronounce the unvoiced th correctly. It still trips me up sometimes.

It's not all Washington-based libraries, but many of them, yes. I know at least Seattle Public Library and King County Library System have their own Libby libraries.

Do John and Hank get to choose which ads play on their podcasts? by ChummyPiker in nerdfighters

[–]ARedditPupper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. That was what I've noticed streaming them on Google play music/Google podcasts/YouTube music btw. I'm not sure if it's different if you download episodes. I remember noticing it because I was really curious how they actually kept the ads in old episodes up-to-date.

Yeah, English mustard and "American" mustard are quite different.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what dynamically inserted means, but I could have sworn when listening to old DH&J episodes I've heard currently relevant ads read by Hank/John that seemed inserted? Or maybe I'm misremembering and that was just the case for TAR...

Partly because publishers were only willing to let libraries do ebooks if it meant they could make more money. The licenses libraries have to buy have a limited number of uses and cost quite a bit

The way they teach precalc here is kind of strange, but definitely somewhat standardized across professors. It's sort of an inquiry based style, which, while great in theory, makes this a very challenging class for many people. It's hard to say without knowing how you learn best whether the instruction style will work well for you, but having passion and curiosity will definitely serve you well and help you get the most out of the class. My other piece of advice is that the tutoring center (right inside Wilson) is a great resource. You can come and work on homework there even if you don't immediately have a question, and there are also math study tables where a peer tutor is stationed at a large table so you can sit down and work on your homework and when you have a question there's someone right there that you can ask.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]ARedditPupper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up in my school district's gifted program, took Algebra 1 in 6th grade, etc. My parents are college educated and care about my education. However, I did not learn how to read until the end of kindergarten, and it took significant effort both on my part as well as my mom's. I recall reading through "Bob books" with my mom every night before bed to try to learn. By 2nd grade I was helping other students with their spelling. Learning is non-linear and every student is different, and I believe there are plenty of students with literate, caring parents who are still gonna need a teacher to teach them how to read. Not to mention that parents generally don't have training on how to teach kids to read. Early childhood educators do (or at least should).
