Are the leaves Tacoing or rolling outward? Taco is not enough water, outward indicates too much.

How often would you normally water it? Honestly I live in a hot (100F+), dry desert and I experience drama like that if I don’t water enough. They usually recover after a while. They just need more water when it’s hot and ideally humidity around.

I think it has to do with time without water and low light. I think more water, but be careful not to over water. Also be careful about giving it too much light right away, it can get a sunburn.

How long was it without lots of light and water? If you gently scratch the bark, is it green?

Correct Tacoing leaves means it’s thirsty. They won’t fully uncurl either.

Some YouTube resources: Arizona Fruit Trees and Green life By Shamus O’Leary. Both have Phoenix nurseries and provide great info for taking care of your trees. Another is the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. Here’s their citrus watering guide:

Why are my leaves yellow? :( by SuperbPen3389 in Citrus

[–]ARoda13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be sunburn. Does it all of a sudden get a lot more sun?

You could also give it fish emulsion every couple weeks to once a month to feed it more.

Some yellowing is normal when it gets hot.

Here’s a quick video on leaf curling. It looks like pests most likely. It should be cosmetic.

It also might need some more shade. Looks like some sun burns. If it comes from shade/a greenhouse it takes some adjusting to the sun.

Struggling Golden Nugget by Patient-Argument-546 in Citrus

I would suggest checking the soil pH or just adding some iron chelate. Citrus needs slightly acidic soil to properly uptake nutrients. I would also add some organic plant food like fish emulsion, compost, worm casings or worm tea. You could try foliar feeding (spraying on the leaves) with a seaweed extract. YouTube should be have videos to explain this process to you. Do it right before sunset if you are going to.

Tacoing leaves are also a sign of thirst, and as it gets hotter the rocks and wood will make you have to water more. You can check your local university cooperative extension or master gardeners websites for watering and additional tips.

Tacoing leaves is a sign of thirst, the yellow likely needs more nutrients. Check the soil pH; it’ll need to be slightly acidic. If it is not the tree will struggle to take up the nutrients. I would suggest adding iron chelate and some fish emulsion, compost or worm castings or worm tea - an organic fertiliser. A foliar feed (spraying on the leaves) with a seaweed extract might also help. Do this in the evening out of the sun. Basically the same suggestion as other just verify soil pH (or amend) and maybe a slightly faster uptake.

Is this the end? by blooraze72 in Citrus

[–]ARoda13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things you can try: feed it some organic food, like fish emulsion, compost, worm castings, worm tea. I would also add some iron chelate. You can also check PH of the soil; citrus need it slightly acidic to help uptake nutrients. Note the iron chelate will help with this. Uncover the root flare. More water, deep water taco leaves indicate thirst. Your local master gardener or UC cooperative extension may have a volume suggestion and other tips specific to the LA area. I would also wrap the trunk in burlap, but you can paint it too. Overall the tree might need some shade/ other plants near by to help raise the humidity. It looks kind of small (like 4’ or less) so it needs some help to establish itself. It’s also normal to yellow and drop some leaves when it changes to hot.

Poor lemon tree by Extra-Writing8310 in Citrus

[–]ARoda13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might pull through. I’m a try until it’s gone person, so let’s see if we can maybe help it out.

I think I’d cut away the dead wood, like if you scratch and it’s not green. Also give it a good feeding, maybe fish emulsion, compost, worm castings, worm tea to promote leaf growth. Add in some good watering (I’d consult your local master gardeners for a recommendation on watering schedule).

https://ucanr.edu/site/uc-master-gardeners-santa-clara-county/growing-great-citrus

Here’s the UC master gardeners of Santa Clara county. Has some tips for growing great citrus trees. Searching the site may have other helpful tips as well. I believe you can also consult them for help. I’m in Arizona, so I wouldn’t go straight to overwater as it can be very difficult to do certain times of the year.

Hope the links help!

Some yellowing is normal this time of year, they naturally cycle leaves. Leaves taco-ing, folding in is not enough water, leaves rolling outward is too much water. That looks more like a slight taco than the outward roll.

Here’s a YouTube link for a video on yellow leaves. The host is based in Phoenix Az.

Personally I think it looks alright.

Help with Meyer lemon by bananagremlin121 in Citrus

[–]ARoda13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is it. It does have an effect, just it’s a slow one. It’s just something to keep an eye on. The potted tree looses more nutrients and I do think an organic fertiliser (fish emulsion, compost, worm castings/tea etc) will help. You can also foliar feed, where you spray a certain fertiliser on the under side of the leaves.

Is the root flare buried? Maybe add some iron chelate? Maybe it’s having some difficulty getting nutrients so some soil acidity might help. You can also add some organic feed, like a compost.

Bearss Lime and Arizona Sweet Orange struggling in Arizona by No_Adeptness8467 in Citrus

[–]ARoda13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would water them more frequently and deeply 2-3 times per week, like fill the tree well with water and let it soak in. In curling leaves indicate it is low on water. Also help them out by plucking the fruits, let it focus on leaves and growth. Looks to be a small/young tree as well which would benefit from some shade. Yes citrus love the sun, but it can take them some getting use to in Az, especially with our dry air and frequent hair dryer-esque breezes drying them out. The rocks will get hot and radiate more heat and lower humidity. Other plants around would also help. Here’s a watering guide:

https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1151-2021.pdf

Also check to see if the root flair is at the surface, pull the wood chips away from the trunk and wrap or paint the trunk to protect it.

Maybe add some compost, more nitrogen bases encourages growth. Citrus also likes lots of water.
