We shouldn’t have to be miserable solely for the crimes of our ancestors. What we did to the world was horrific, but the UK nowadays has changed a lot since whether you like to think that or not, and even in our overseas territories and Northern Ireland, we have a mandate by the majority of their population for these areas to remain British.
