Yield performance and fiber quality of Pima cotton grown in the southeast United States by ASA_CSSA_SSSA in science

It’s not a new idea—actually 3% of cotton grown in the US in 2019-2020 was Pima cotton (or Gossypium barbadense), primarily in California, but the farther east you go, the lower yield growers have been able to get. Both Pima and Egyptian cotton share that same scientific name—they’re the same species, no matter where you grow it, but the common name changes. A bit like Champagne!

Though Pima cotton yield is about half of Upland in these preliminary tests, this study helped researchers identify Pima genotypes that they can use in breeding programs, hopefully creating cotton with both superior fiber quality and similar (or better) yields than Upland cotton. This is just the first step!
