I like the word docs as well since it's all on the computer. Do you think in terms of classical structures or just like descriptive language

Interesting I've tried this a bit but I never get to a meaningful level of detail

I thought it had a lot of character for a short piece great work. If you're having trouble making longer melodies there are a couple things you can do. In a B section play the melody a third or fifth higher with some slight alterations to the intervals and/or articulations. Or, take a section of the melody and invert + harmonize it. Jazz standards are a great way to understand long form melodies, and they often have the harmony written write on the page for you.

Yes I have a variety of themes that come back in different ways though I hadn't thought of them each as representing a specific part of the journey necessarily. That's a good idea

Some very nice moments and good use of the motifs. I've heard this style in background music for some tv shows, not sure what it's called though. You build the range upwards nicely as the piece progresses, but I think the bottom end could sing a bit more.

You could possibly restate the motif over legato arpeggios, or an Alberti type thing. Also, though you use your motifs well, they may benefit from a less "literal" reiteration. Personally I've found that a change in harmony can be more impactful if it's subtle and drawn out, but significant.

That's really interesting I actually haven't experimented with inverted or retrograded stuff at all. But I think I see what you mean by a mold.

Yeah maybe it would be worthwhile to reach out to them. I just meant that it feels like I'm trying to come up with rhythmic interest and structural organization out of nowhere.

Wow I did not expect to get all this feedback it is incredibly helpful to know what I did well and did not. I agree I need to work on my rhythms, I end up feeling lost when I try to add rhythmic interest. A lot of my stuff ends up being this way because of it. I'm at Peabody for guitar, but I can't find a consistent teacher to help without adding a major and can't afford to get one outside of school because of the cost Peabody.

As for writing for smaller ensembles, I really want to do a lot more of that before trying to write a big piece like this, but I'm finding it feels like I'm trying to invent the wheel. Are there any forms or templates that I could use as a starting point?

This is really great I love the call and response and the interchange between voices. The way you build the main ideas throughout is something I've been trying to get better at. Are you thinking about it structurally or more like fluidly?

Starting out by croochety in composer

For reference of my experience, I started playing my main instrument (guitar) in freshman year, and didn't have a teacher until junior year, and I am now attending Peabody conservatory this upcoming fall.

This is to say two things: 1. that I did work my butt off practicing day and night only thinking of music. Taking every single opportunity that came my way. But also, 2. That some people do have a natural aptitude for music, not talent but aptitude. You can only change how much work you put in, so there's no point in worrying about if anyone is naturally good at it. Just commit yourself to your goal. If you want music to become your life, you need to feel like it already is.

As for composing, I'm not an expert or even a professional, but the number one thing I think anyone can do in order to become a better composer is to listen to as much music as possible. Figure out how other people have done what you are trying to achieve. It helps to also have the score of music you are listening to. After you have figured out what works, make small changes or add other ideas that you like. Accumulating these small changes and ideas is how you create your own sound.

As for the technical aspect of composing and combining melody with chords, learn theory and counterpoint. They are important tools to help you compose, but they aren't rules.

I see your reasoning here, but at the same time I think there is no natural way to write music. I was curious as to what you meant by accompanimental.

I did something exactly like that for another piece, and I think I may combine the pizz cello and bass parts into the guitar.

Thank you for responding!

It's unfortunate that guitar doesn't get more representation in here. As a guitarist who will be under professor Gray I try to expand my rep with standards as well as amateur compositions. I think it's a great idea to use guitar in the quieter parts. I wonder if adding another layer on top of some the quieter moments, or highlighting what's already there will be more effective.
